Vegas Still Vexing for Aces

Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Doug Wright took advantage of a friendly carom off the endboards and deposited what turned out to be the winning goal for Las Vegas in a 3-1 decision over Alaska Tuesday before 3,813 at Orleans Arena.
The Wranglers scored in the gameÂ’s first minute, as Greg Day snapped home a rebound of a Chris Kenady shot just 45 seconds into the first period. Play quickly settled down into the familiar pattern of the previous four games between these two clubs, where the only game decided by more than one goal had been AlaskaÂ’s 3-1 victory at home December 20.
The Aces dominated most of the second period, outshooting Las Vegas 12-3 and tying the game on a laser off the stick of Mike Lee, who roofed a wrist shot over the glove of Wranglers goaltender Marc Magliarditti at 11:01. Alaska came within seconds of killing a two-man advantage for Las Vegas late in the period, but a simple dump into the corner took a huge hop off the boards, beyond the reach of Aces goalie Lance Mayes and directly onto the stick of Wright, who flipped in a backhander for a 2-1 lead with 39 seconds remaining.
Alaska never got that goal back in the final frame, as Jonathan Gauthier hit a post with about five minutes left and Magliarditti did the rest, finishing with 27 saves in beating the Aces for the third straight time in Las Vegas (the other wins came by the score of 2-1). Kenady sealed only AlaskaÂ’s third loss in 17 games with an empty netter at 19:35 of the third period, with the Aces in the midst a six-on-four situation after a late penalty.
Alaska (22-11-3) can blame its power play, which went 0-for-7 and has converted just five times in its last 74 attempts. The Aces, who dropped into third place in the Pacific Division, return to action Friday in Bakersfield, the opener of a three-games-in-three-nights stretch that wraps up Saturday and Sunday against San Diego. Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
