Portland Rallies For 5-3 Win Over Trenton

(Portland, ME)- Portland scored four runs in the sixth inning and went on for a 5-3 win over Trenton on Wednesday night from Hadlock Field. Trenton's loss coupled with New Britain's win over Reading on Wednesday night, drops the Thunder to two games behind the Rock Cats for second place in the Northern Division with five games remaining in the regular season.

Down 3-1 in the sixth inning, Portland scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Second baseman Ryan Kalish led off the frame with a double against Trenton Reliever Philip Barleski (0-1). After a walk by Left fielder Daniel Nava, Center fielder Ryan Kalish connected on a two-run triple to tie the game at 3-3. Kalish had two hits in the game, and now has five hits in the series for Portland. Bartleski did not retire a batter in his Double-A debut, and took the loss as he was charged with three runs and two hits. Thunder Reliever Wilkins Arias came on for Bartleski and gave up the go-ahead RBI single to Portland Third baseman Jorge Jimenez. The single gave Portland a 4-3 lead. Portland capped off the scoring in the inning on a fielder's choice RBI ground out off the bat of Catcher Juan Apodaca.

The Thunder scored three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Center fielder Austin Krum led off the top of the first inning with a single against Portland Starting Pitcher Blake Maxwell. He advanced to second base as Designated Hitter Matt Cusick walked. With one out, First baseman Chris Malec walked to load the bases. Right fielder Richie Robnett struck out for the second out, but Catcher Kyle Anson came through with a bases-clearing two-out three-run double to give the Thunder a 3-0 lead. Anson was thrown out trying to stretch his double into a triple.

Trenton Starting Pitcher Josh Schmidt allowed only three hits and one run over five innings. He tied a season-high with five innings pitched. Portland Starting Pitcher Blake Maxwell also tied a season-high with six innings pitched. He scattered four hits and three runs. Maxwell struck out three and walked two. Trenton Shortstop Eduardo Nunez had his eight-game hitting streak snapped. Nunez went 0 x 4 with two strikeouts.

Trenton and Portland wrap up their three-game series on Thursday night from Hadlock Field. RHP Zach McAllister (6-5, 2.30) will start for Trenton against Porltland LHP Kris Johnson (0-2, 9.00). Game time is set for 6:00 p..m.
