Fightins shutout in Altoona

(Altoona, PA) - Mitch Keller (6-2) pitched six shutout innings to lead the Altoona Curve (27-27) to a 4-0 win over the Reading Fightin Phils (25-32) on Wednesday night. He gave up just two hits while issuing three walks and recording a season-high eight strikeouts.

The Curve took a 4-0 lead against Elniery Garcia (0-5) and the Fightins in the bottom of the first inning. Curve first baseman Will Craig hit a RBI single that was followed by center fielder Jason Martin scoring on a throwing error by Deivi Grullon. Catcher Christian Kelley hit a two-run double that scored Craig and right fielder Tyler Gaffney.

Garcia ended up retiring 12 of the final 17 batters he faced after giving up the two-run double to Kelley. He would leave the game after five innings and hand the game over to Seth McGarry. McGarry pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning as he recorded one strikeout and gave up one hit.

The Fightin Phils had runners on first and third with two outs against Curve relief pitcher Bret Helton in the top of the seventh inning. They failed to get a run across. The Fightins had a similar situation in the top of the eighth inning. They had runners on first and second and couldn't score a run.

Jeff Singer entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning to pitch in relief of McGarry. He struck out two batters in one inning of work. Alexis Rivero pitched the bottom of the eighth inning for the Fightin Phils. He gave up just one hit while striking out one batter.

Geoff Hartlieb earned his fifth save of the season for the Curve as he pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
