Stamps Pick up Nine Players in CFL Draft

The Calgary Stampeders selected nine players in the 2014 CFL Draft on Tuesday including Laval offensive lineman Pierre Lavertu with the first overall selection.

The Stampeders acquired the top pick from the Ottawa Redblacks approximately 30 minutes before the start of the draft along with the rights to non-import offensive lineman Marwan Hage in exchange for non-import offensive lineman Jon Gott.

Lavertu was a four-time Quebec conference all-star and a three-time CIS all-Canadian and was a member of the Rouge et Or's Vanier Cup-winning squads in 2010, 2012 and 2013.

Calgary's other selections were:

Quinn Smith (DL, Concordia - first round, seventh overall)

The versatile Smith was selected with Calgary's own first-round selection. He played both offensive guard and defensive tackle for the Stingers. He played seven games in 2013 and recorded 13 tackles, three assisted tackles, five tackles for loss and one sack. Smith is a native of Scarborough, Ont.

Max Caron (LB, Concordia - second round, 16th overall)

The Stamps made it back-to-back Concordia selections by choosing Smith's teammate Caron. In eight games in 2013, Caron recorded 43.5 total tackles, including six tackles for loss, three sacks one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. In 2012, he was second in the Quebec conference with 60 tackles and added two sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery. He was the winner of the President's Trophy as the outstanding defensive player in the CIS in 2011.

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (OL, McGill - third round, 19th overall)

Rated the top prospect in the draft, Duvernay-Tardif played eight games at offensive tackle for the Redmen in 2013. The six-foot-five, 315-lb. native of St-Hilaire, Que., was selected in the sixth round (200th overall) by the National Football League's Kanas City Chiefs this past weekend. The two-time all-Canadian was named the winner of the J.P. Metras Trophy as the top college lineman in 2013 and was one of only two CIS players to take part in the 89th East-West Shine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Adam Thibault (DB, Laval - third round, 24th overall)

The Quebec City native was the second Rouge et Or player selected by the Stamps on Tuesday. The six-foot, 195-lb. defensive back registered 21 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles for Laval during the club's 2013 championship season. He earned an invitation to the 2014 NFL Super Regional Combine.

Joe Circelli (OL, Western - third round, 25th overall)

Circelli was part of an offensive line that helped the Mustangs lead the Ontario conference with 1,806 rushing yards in 2013. He was a second-team OUA all-star.

Derek Wiggan (DL, Queen's - fourth round, 34th overall)

The Toronto native had 28 total tackles in 2013 along with 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and three pass breakups and earned first-team OUA all-star recognition for a second consecutive season.

Tyler Crapigna (K/P, McMaster - fifth round, 40th overall)

The Nepean, Ont., native kicked 60 field goals, six singles and 115 extra points for a total of 301 points in his four-year collegiate career with the Marauders. He kicked 16 of 19 field goals (an 84.0-per cent success rate) in 2013. He had a 36.0-yard punt average last season and had 11 punts inside the 20-yard line.

Brian Marshall (REC, Western - seventh round, 61st overall)

The Mustangs receiver - the son of former Hamilton Tiger-Cats head coach Greg Marshall - had 34 catches for 753 yards and nine touchdowns in seven games for the Mustangs in 2013. The previous season, he led Western with 40 catches for 765 yards and six majors.
