Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB., May 13, 2014 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are pleased to announce that with its second overall pick in the 2014 CFL Draft, the club has selected Matthias Goossen (GO-SON), a centre, who has excelled the past three seasons at Simon Fraser University.
Goossen (6-4, 294, Simon Fraser, October 14, 1992 in Richmond, BC), has been named a GNAC First Team All-Conference the past three seasons at Simon Fraser. Named to the conference all-star team the past two seasons, he started all 10 games in 2013 for the Clan. He was also named a BSN Pre-Season All-American prior to the 2012 season. Goossen played every position on the offensive line during his time at Simon Fraser, while also being the offensive line captain the past two seasons.
"We are very thrilled to have the opportunity to select Matthias with our second overall pick," said General Manager Kyle Walters. "When he came to Winnipeg a few weeks ago, he demonstrated a great desire to be successful, both on and off the field, carried himself professionally and confidently, and we are excited to bring him into this organization and help him grow as a professional football player."
"This is obviously one of the greatest days of my football career," said Goossen. "Heading to an organization like Winnipeg, where everything seems to be on the rise, including an amazing stadium which I was able to visit, this is just an incredible thrill. I was so impressed with the whole organization, the facilities and everything about the Bombers, I cannot wait to get there and compete in camp. I hear the fans are second to none and that just makes it even more exciting for me."
In addition to playing high school football with the Vancouver College Fighting Irish, won a bronze medal at the 2010 Football Canada Cup with Team BC. He also suited up for Team World at the 2012 IFAF International Bowl and helped Team World defeat Team USA for the first time ever at that event.
