BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Great Lakes Loons made the most of a pair of contests Thursday night at Bowling Green, defeating the Hot Rods 4-3 in the early evening, followed by a 1-0 win in the night cap.

The two teams resumed a game suspended from Wednesday in the middle of the second with the game scoreless. The Hot Rods took a 1-0 lead against reliever Miguel Sulbaran with a bases loaded walk in the second.

But in the third, the Loons put three on with successive infield single by speedsters James Baldwin, Robbie Garvey and Malcolm Holland. Tyler Ogle followed with a double to left-center unloading the bases and giving the Loons the lead, 3-1.

The Hot Rods came back with single runs in the third and fifth innings to tie the score. In the third, Ryan Dunn notched an RBI double. In the fifth, Marty Gantt lifted a sac fly to tie the score.

In the top of the sixth inning, Jeremy Rathjen led off the frame with a double and eventually scored in the inning on a fielder's choice by Paul Hoenecke with what proved to be the game-winner.

Geoff Brown (1-0) set down the final seven batters in order to secure his first win of the season.

The second game was dominated by the mound men. The Loons scored in the first inning off starter Dylan Floro. After Kevin Taylor and Rathjen recorded back-to-back hits, Hoenecke grounded out to second base with the infield back to bring in the game's lone run.

Ralston Cash started for the Loons and hurled four solid innings, allowing just three hits, no walks and striking out one. He left the game after just 51 pitches, and Craig Stem entered the game to protect a 1-0 lead. Hot Rods' DH Geoff Rowan nearly snuck a grounder into center field to tie the score in the fifth but Taylor made a great backhanded play in the hole to record an out and keep the Hot Rods off the board.

Stem (1-0) worked 2 1/3 innings to notch the win. After allowing two hits in the ninth to put the tying and winning runs on base, Luis Meza entered and recorded the final two outs for his first save. Floro (3-1) was the tough-luck loser with six solid innings.

The Hot Rods and Loons meet for a doubleheader to wrap up the four-game series Friday night. The first game will begin at 6 p.m. E.T. Right-hander Jharel Cotton (1-3, 3.96) will start for the Loons in the first game against lefty Sean Bierman (2-1, 1.54). Neither team has announced a Game 2 starter; both teams are expected to start a member of the relief corps.

The games will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.

The Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
