BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Jan. 15, 2013) - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers had planned to honor those loved ones lost in the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on Sunday, Jan. 20. With respect to the community, the date will now take place on Saturday, Apr. 6.
"After speaking with members of the Newtown community in recent weeks, we've been asked to honor those lost and their families later in the season," Sound Tigers President Howard Saffan said. "We want to respect the community's wishes during this difficult time, and we look forward to hosting them on a very special night in April."
In memory of the 26 lives lost, the Sound Tigers are wearing commemorative green ribbons and helmet stickers, a tribute that will remain for the entire 2012-13 season.
The players also honored the 20 children who lost their lives by each wearing one of their last names on the back of their jerseys in place of their own name in their game on December 22 against the Adirondack Phantoms.
The players will present these commemorative jerseys to those families or representatives of those families following the game on April 6.
The Sound Tigers return to action with a pair of games this weekend at Webster Bank Arena, when they host the Binghamton Senators on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. and the Springfield Falcons on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. For information on group outings to an upcoming game, call the Sound Tigers at (203) 334-GOAL or e-mail info@soundtigers.com.
