Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

By virtue of his historic performance in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, Albuquerque Isotopes slugger Jerry Sands has been named Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for games beginning on July 23 and continuing through July 29 after tying a PCL record with two grand slams in one game.

With his bases-loaded home runs in the first and fourth innings of Sunday's night-cap, Sands became just the fifth person in the 109-year history of the Pacific Coast League to belt two slams in a single game joining Pete Scheider (1923), Babe Pinelli (1929), A.J. Pierzynski (2000), and Gregorio Petit (2010). With his eight RBI in the contest, Sands also equaled an Albuquerque Triple-A record set by Paul Konerko in 1997 and a franchise mark set by Gerald Williams in 2003.

In addition to his monstrous performance in the second game of the twin-bill, Sands also drove in the eventual game-winning runs in the first contest, giving him 10 runs batted in on the night. The outfielder also had a four-hit night on Saturday against the Sounds, finishing the week batting at a .375 (12x32) clip with five runs, a double, three homers, and 11 RBI in eight games. Thanks to this week's production, Sands now has a team-high 72 RBI on the year, fourth-most in the PCL.

Sands is the second Isotope to be singled out for the PCL's weekly accolade this year, joining Alex Castellanos, who earned the award for the week of April 22.

After two more games in Nashville, the "˜Topes are back home this Wednesday for an action-packed eight-game homestand that includes cowbell night, a Dodger Stadium replica giveaway, and fireworks! Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.abqisotopes.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
