Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Oklahoma City, OK - Tony Abreu scored the game-winning run on an error in the ninth inning as Omaha overcame a six-run deficit to stun Oklahoma City, 7-6, Monday night in the third of four meetings at Bricktown Ballpark. The Storm Chasers won their second straight to improve to 65-45 on the season and assure themselves a winning road trip by claiming victory for the seventh time in 11 games with one contest remaining.
Mickey Storey had tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief before Derrick Robinson led off the decisive frame with a pinch-hit single, advanced to second on an Irving Falu sacrifice bunt and moved to third base on a Johnny Giavotella ground out. Abreu then stung a two-hopper back through the middle that Storey knocked down but in his haste to get the out at first base, the right-hander hurried his throw and tossed it in the dirt before it was scooped up too late by Mike Hessman, allowing Robinson to cross the plate to break the tie and send the visitors to their ninth win in 15 games against the RedHawks this season.
Jeremy Jeffress worked two shutout innings out of the bullpen but departed after issuing a lead off walk to Jimmy Paredes in the bottom of the ninth. Vin Mazzaro assumed the hill and got Fernando Martinez to line into a double play and Hessman to ground out to end the game and keep the RedHawks 1.5 games behind Albuquerque in the American Conference Southern Division.
Matt Dominguez came through with a two-out, two-run single in the first inning to start the scoring and continue his ridiculous production against the Storm Chasers, as he has driven in 19 runs against them this season. The hosts produced another two-out run in the second on a base hit by Brandon Barnes that plated Travis Buck, who had opened the frame with a walk.
J.B. Shuck singled in a run and Landon Powell and Barnes had run-producing outs as the hosts doubled their lead in the fourth. Storm Chasers starter Nate Adcock was touched up for those six runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out three over his five frames of work.
Oberholtzer kept the visitors off the board until Wil Myers launched a two-run home run in the sixth, his 18th at the Triple-A level and 31st of the season, to slice the lead to 6-2. The OKC southpaw went six innings, giving up the two runs on five hits while walking two and fanning five in his first encounter with the Chasers.
Fernando Abad took over and yielded a two-out, two-run double to Abreu that trimmed the margin to 6-4 and moved the Omaha shortstop into a tie with Giavotella for the fourth most two-base hits in franchise history during a single season with 34. Myers then followed with an opposite-field blast to right-center field to tie the game and end the right-hander's evening.
The series and road trip concludes Tuesday night with left-hander Chris Dwyer making the start against Oklahoma City southpaw Rudy Owens. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone Two, The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
