Sands And White Awarded For Elite Play

Published on July 30, 2012 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Last week Jerry Sands of the Albuquerque Isotopes and Alex White of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox were the top performers in the Pacific Coast League, and today the league office recognized their feats by announcing them the winners of the Player and Pitcher of the Week awards respectively.

Sands had a solid week as he hit .375, including a four-hit night on Saturday in Nashville, but nothing compared to the game he played the next evening. In his second game on Sunday against the Sounds, the outfielder matched a PCL record as he smashed two grand slams in Albuquerque's 11-0 win, which had only been done four times before in league history. To go along with his historical performance, Sands totaled three home runs and 11 RBI on the week, both good for second in the league.

Born in Clayton, North Carolina, Sands was a 25th round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2008 draft. He was a Pioneer League All-Star in 2009, and in 2010 was a Midwest League All-Star as well as Dodgers "Minor League Player of the Year." In 2011, he made his Major League debut on April 18th versus the Atlanta Braves, doubling against Tim Hudson in his first at-bat. In 2012, Sands is batting .274 with 18 home runs and 72 RBI for the first-place Isotopes.

White made two dominant starts last week, earning both wins at home versus Tacoma and Fresno. On Monday against the Rainiers, the right-hander threw seven shutout innings as he struck out two and allowed just four hits, and followed up Saturday with eight innings of one-run ball, as he struck out eight Grizzlies while keeping them in check. White put together a 0.60 ERA and 0.73 WHIP, while his 15.0 innings led the league.

White, born in Greenville, North Carolina, was a first-round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians in 2009 out of the University of North Carolina. In 2010, he went 8-7 with a 2.28 ERA for the Akron Aeros of the Eastern League, and on April 30th, 2011, he made his Major League debut against the Detroit Tigers as he pitched six innings, striking out four while allowing two runs. On July 30th of that year he was part of a trade to the Colorado Rockies for Ubaldo Jimenez. In 2012 White is 3-4 with a 3.71 ERA for the Sky Sox.
