Iowa Cubs News Release

Albuquerque, NM - Wearing throwback jerseys of the 1972 Albuquerque Dukes, the Isotopes (58-42) clubbed five home runs in a 16-3 win over the Iowa Cubs tonight. Albuquerque started with eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to their seventh straight home win over Iowa. The Isotopes lead this series 2-0 and lead the season series 10-4.

The Cubs claimed the early lead on a two-run homer by Josh Vitters in the top of the first inning, but the 'Topes wasted no time in responding. The first five men reached and scored against Cubs' starter Casey Coleman. Josh Fields had a two-run double and Jerry Sands smacked a two-run homer before the first out was recorded. Elian Herrera added the exclamation point to the first inning rally with a three-run double to left. Twelve men batted in the inning for the Isotopes. Coleman (2-4) worked through 2.2 innings and allowed nine run on 10 hits, walked four, and struck out three.

Albuquerque starter Blake Johnson (1-0) pitched a season-high five inning and allowed three runs on five hits for the win. Vitters drove in Jim Adduci with a single in the third inning for the Cubs' other run.

Alberto Cabrera followed Coleman and struck out four of the first five batters he faced to get through the fourth inning. The 'Topes got their bats going again though in the fifth. The 'Topes would send 10 men to the plate and score five more runs on five hits, including three homers, in the inning. Only two of the runs were earned as the inning started with an error by Adrian Cardenas at second base. Trent Oeltjen followed with a two-run homer. After a groundout, Fields connected on his second homer of the series. With two outs and a man on, Tim Federowicz lined his eighth homer of the season into the Cubs' bullpen. It was the first time this season that the Cubs allowed three home runs in an inning.

Rodrigo Lopez came in to get the final out in the fifth inning and pitched a scoreless sixth. Jay Jackson allowed a run in the seventh on a two-out triple by Ivan DeJesus, Jr. Catcher Brian Esposito pitched for the second time in three games and allowed the 'Topes final run on a leadoff homer to Oeltjen in the eighth. The 16 runs and five home runs for the 'Topes were the most allowed by the Cubs in a game this season.

WIth tonight's loss, the Cubs have dropped three straight games and are 3-7 since the All-Star Break. The team's record has dropped to 19 games under .500 for the first time this season.

The Cubs and Isotopes continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 Central Time. RH Chris Volstad (2-4, 5.55) will start for the Cubs against RH Stephen Fife (7-5, 4.53) for the Isotopes. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
