Last time out...
The River City Rascals scored eight times in the eighth inning to run away from the Joliet Slammers by a final score of 13-1 Friday night. Joliet actually took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a RBI grounder from Hector Pellot. But the Rascals scored three times in the fourth inning and twice more in the fifth to take the lead for good. The Slammers tallied six hits in the contest, five of them coming from left-handed hitters as the righties struggled against side-arming right-hander Nick Kennedy of the Rascals. Jim Schult suffered the loss in his first start for the Slammers, going four innings and giving up four runs on five hits. The Slammers were still in the game until the eighth when River City sent 12 men to the plate before the Slammers even recorded an out. A Jason Patton two-run home run got the inning going for the Rascals and they never looked back on their way to eight runs in the frame.
Steven Maxwell's last outing came on June 11 against the Schaumburg Boomers. He went seven innings, giving up four runs on five hits as he took the loss in a 5-3 defeat for the Slammers. Maxwell has been excellent so far this season, striking out at least seven batters in three of his five starts. He's also lasted seven innings in three of five starts. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.
Last night marked the largest margin of defeat in franchise history as the Slammers lost by 12. Their previous biggest loss was 10 runs in 2011.
The Slammers find themselves in fifth place in the West Division. Part of the reason is their 4-7 record against West Division opponents. They also haven't played the two teams behind them in the division.
So far in 2012 the Slammers have walked 107 times, the third most in the league. In 2011 they finished with the second fewest walks in the league.
Give me some relief!
In 43.2 IP in May, Joliet's bullpen had an era of 1.88. In 53 IP in June, they have a 6.11 ERA.
Almost the same as last year...
The Slammers currently sit at 13-13, the exact same record they had after 26 games in 2011. After 26 games last year, Joliet was 2.5 games out of first. This year they sit four games out of first.
The Slammers are 2-10 in games when they make an error. They are 11-3 in games when they do not.
When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 11-4, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 1-9.
