Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to the 11-7 victory against the Greenville Drive on Saturday evening, before 2,362 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium. Every Crawdads starter collected at least one hit and they compiled 16 knocks as a team, cruising to the win.
Hickory (33-28) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning against Greenville starter LHP Mickey Pena (L, 4-3). RF Zach Cone led off with a singe and DH Drew Robinson followed immediately with another base hit to put two runners on. 2B Alejandro Selen shot a deep double to center field, scoring Cone and moving Robinson to third. Robinson and Selen then both came home when C Kellin Deglan pulled a two-run double to the wall in right field, putting the Crawdads up, 3-0.
Greenville (31-30) responded in part in the top of the third against RHP Jerad Eickhoff (W, 6-4). C Jordan Weems led off with a walk and advanced to third following a stolen base and a throwing error. Weems would score on an RBI single by CF Drew Turocy, cutting the Drive deficit to 3-1.
Hickory matched the Greenville run with one of it's own in the bottom of the third. 3B Hanser Alberto doubled to left field with one out. Robinson then pulled a sharp line drive to right field for an RBI base hit, plating Alberto and increasing the lead to 4-1.
Greenville RF Lucas LeBlanc hit a solo home run over the left field wall in the top of the fourth inning to close the gap once again and bring the score to 4-2.
However, the Crawdads stretched the lead back out in the bottom of the fourth. Deglan led off the inning with a single to right field. A base hit from 1B Trever Adams advanced Deglan to third base with one out. Pena was then called for a balk, which forced Deglan in from third, boosting the Hickory lead to 5-2.
The Drive refused to fall too far behind, striking for two tallies in the top of the fifth. With one out, SS Jose Vinicio singled to right field to get on base. Vinicio advanced to second base on a balk and went to third on a ground out off the bat of 2B Jose Garcia. After Turocy drew a walk, 3B Garin Cecchini drove in Vinicio with a single to right field advancing Turocy to third. Turocy then came in to score on a single by DH David Renfroe, cutting the 'Dads lead to 5-4.
The Crawdads, though, blew the game open with a big sixth inning against RHP Justin Erasmus. With one out, CF Jordan Akins doubled to left field and quickly scored on an RBI double by Adams. Adams then trotted home when LF Chris Grayson rocketed a two-run home run to right-center field. SS Luis Sardinas followed the long home run with a single and advanced to second on a ground out by Alberto. Cone then drove an RBI single up the middle, bringing Sardinas in for the 9-4 lead. Robinson brought in Cone from first with an RBI triple just inside the right field line, and then Selen lined an RBI single into center field to cap the big inning and put the Crawdads ahead by seven, 11-4.
With LHP Andrew Faulkner on the mound in the top of the eighth, the Drive chipped the big deficit down with three unearned runs. However, Faulkner got out of the eighth despite the miscues and slammed the door with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, closing the 11-7 victory for the 'Dads.
