Asheville Tourists News Release

For the second straight evening, the Asheville Tourists dug themselves an early hole and unlike Friday, they were unable to climb their way out of it. West Virginia led from start to finish and defeated the Tourists at McCormick Field 9-5 on Saturday.

The Power struck with four runs in the top of the first; the final two coming on Junior Sosa's two-out single to left. Asheville answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Harold Riggins and Tyler Massey each came through with RBI singles and it was 4-2 after one.

In the third, Riggins doubled home Sam Mende with no outs and the Tourists had an excellent chance to put together a big inning. Robby Rowland limited the damage to just one run and he induced an inning-ending double-play with runners at the corners.

The game remained 4-3 until the Power broke loose in the seventh. Kirk Singer drove in Elias Diaz from third and two batters later Willy Garcia clubbed a three-run Homer to make it 8-3.

Mende gave the T's a lift with a two-run Home Run in the bottom of the seventh, but that is all the offense Asheville could muster. The Power tacked on an unearned run in the eighth and held on to win 9-5.

Alex Gillingham took the mound for the first time in eight days, and he suffered the loss. Nelson Gonzalez did shine for the Tourists by pitching a perfect ninth inning. West Virginia's Mike Jefferson worked the final four frames and earned his first save of the year.

The Tourists and the Power will face off on Sunday afternoon for the final time in 2012, with the series on the line. Asheville is 7-4 against West Virginia this season.
