Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Rome, GA - Edwin Escobar was in line to pitch the Augusta GreenJackets to their fifth straight win before he ran out of gas in the eighth inning. The Rome Braves scored a pair of runs in the eighth to overtake the GreenJackets and steal a 4-3 win away from Augusta on Saturday night from Rome's State Mutual Stadium.
Leading 3-2 in the eighth, Escobar (2-4) got the first out of the inning before facing Fernando De Los Santos - who'd already picked up two hits, including a home run, off Escobar earlier in the game. De Los Santos drilled a solo shot over the left field fence - his second of the night and sixth of the season - to tie the game at three. Escobar remained in the game and got the second out of the inning before giving up a single to Tony Mueller and the go-ahead double on the first pitch he threw to Kyle Kubitza to give the Braves the 4-3 edge as the Braves scored the game's final four runs.
Escobar was dominant until the eighth as he allowed half of the six hits he surrendered in the eighth inning. He was charged with all four runs in his 7.2 innings - a season-long - with a walk and three strikeouts to round out his line.
Jeff Arnold walked to open the ninth inning, putting the tying run on base to restore some hope to the GreenJackets dugout. Brett Krill followed by grounding into a double play though to wipe the bases clean and Jesus Galindo bounced out to the shortstop to end the game and make a winner out of Jarrett Miller (3-0). In relief of starter Greg Ross, Miller walked two in 2.1 hitless, scoreless innings while striking out a pair.
In a game where six of the seven runs were scored with two outs in their respective inning, the GreenJackets got on the board in the second inning on Jose Cuevas's second home run in as many nights - a solo shot to put the GreenJackets up 1-0. Augusta added a pair in the fifth on a two-run Jose Flores single to push their lead to 3-0. Flores drilled the single in an extremely clutch spot, with two outs in the inning and two strikes on him.
The Braves answered Augusta's fifth inning runs with a pair of their own in the bottom of the inning on De Los Santos's first home run of the game - a two-run shot that pulled the Braves to within a run at 3-2. Escobar would retire the next eight hitters he faced before De Los Santos stepped up against him again in the eighth to drill the game-tying homer.
The Rome win snapped Augusta's season-long, four-game winning streak and it pushed the Braves' record against the GreenJackets to 6-2 this season and 4-1 against Augusta at State Mutual Stadium. The GreenJackets will send Joe Biagini (0-3, 7.27) to the mound in the rubber match of the series on Sunday against Rome's Rafael Briceno (3-5, 5.90) in Augusta's final road game of the first half. First pitch from Rome comes at 2:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 1:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Monday to return the favor against the Braves, hosting Rome in the opener of a three-game set at 7:05 p.m. Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
