Norfolk Wins Opener, Nightcap Postponed

June 1, 2012 - International League (IL) Norfolk Tides

Lew Ford singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh, lifting Norfolk to a 4-3 walk-off win in game one of a scheduled doubleheader Friday night.

Game two of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain.

With the score tied at 3-3, Carlos Rojas started the rally with a one-out walk off of Manny Delcarman (1-3). After LJ Hoes pinch-ran for Rojas, Xavier Avery followed with a single to right field that advanced Hoes to third. Ford then lined an 0-1 pitch into right field to score Hoes and give Norfolk the victory.

Ford finished with a pair of RBI singles in the contest, upping his average to .393 in 14 games since joining the Tides.

Jamie Hoffmann and Jai Miller each homered for Norfolk, which has now hit 10 home runs over its last five games. Miller's home run was his eighth of the season and fourth in the last five games.

J.C. Romero (1-0) earned the win after recording the final two outs of the seventh.

Due to the game two rainout, the two clubs will play a doubleheader beginning at 6:15 Saturday night at Harbor Park.

In game one, Tommy Hunter will make his Tides' debut opposite right-hander Nelson Figueroa (3-1, 4.40). In the nightcap, Zach Clark (1-0, 3.00) will oppose left-hander Mike O'Connor (1-1, 2.97).
