Moore & Teahen Lead Chiefs Past Tribe 7-5

INDIANAPOLIS -- Syracuse first baseman Mark Teahen and right fielder Tyler Moore combined for three runs and six RBI as Moore blasted a mammoth two-run home run and two-run triple and Teahen came through with a two-run single to help lead the Chiefs over the Indianapolis Indians 7-5 in front of a crowd of 9,292 on Friday night at Victory Field.

After CF Starling Marte blasted the Tribe to an early 1-0 advantage with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first, Teahen and Moore rallied the Chiefs with four scores in the top of the third.

Syracuse's third inning rally all began with a key throwing error that allowed CF Erik Komatsu to reach with two outs and moved C James Skelton to third after he reached earlier in the frame on a base hit. Former Indians INF Jim Negrych then drew a base on balls to load the bases and set the stage for Teahen, who rolled a base hit to center to plate both Skelton and Komatsu and give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead.

After Teahen's RBI base knock, Moore stepped to the plate and launched a ball that bounced off the top of the center field wall clearing the bases to give Syracuse a 4-1 advantage, while allowing the slugger to speed all the way to third for his first triple of the season. The Indians would, however, even the score with three scores of their own in the bottom of the third, sparked once again by Marte.

The Tribe center fielder led off the bottom of third with his International League leading sixth triple of the season and eventually scored on a clutch two-out base knock by 1B Jeff Clement later in the frame. Following Clement's clutch base hit, 3B Yamaico Navarro ripped the Tribe's second three-bagger of the frame to right plating Clement and putting him in position to score when RF Jeff Larish followed with a base hit to left.

However, the dynamic duo of Teahen and Moore would come through again for the Chiefs the in top of the fifth as Teahen rolled a two-out infield single before eventually travelling along on a mammoth bomb from Moore that gave the Chiefs a 6-4 lead. Moore's longball was his eighth of the season after the slugger connected on 31 homers in each of his last two seasons.

Marte would try to rally the Tribe again in the top of the seventh when he laid down a bunt single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error, before coming plateward on a groundout by SS Chase d'Arnaud. However, that would be all the scoring the Indians would manage, while Negrych launched a ninth inning solo shot for Syracuse to give the game its final score of 7-5.

The efforts of Teahen and Moore spoiled an excellent performance from Marte who scored three runs and fell just a double short of the cycle. Over his last 10 games Marte has now hit .357 (15-for-42) with nine runs, three home runs and nine RBI.

Making his second rehab appearance of the season with the Tribe, starter Jeff Karstens (5.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) was the victim of multiple errors and suffered the loss despite allowing just two earned runs and striking out six over five innings pitched. On the other side, Syracuse starter Yunesky Maya (5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) picked up the win to improve to 4-5 on the season despite allowing four of the Tribe's five scores.

Following Maya, Syracuse relievers Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 SO), Mike Gonzalez (1.1 IP, 2 SO) and Hassan Pena (1.0 IP) combined to allow just one unearned run over three innings of relief with Dirkx and Gonzalez each earning holds and Pena notching his second save.

With loss the Indians fall to 31-23 on the season, while the Chiefs improve to 26-28 with the victory. The two teams will continue their series on Saturday night ay 7:05 p.m. with LHP Jeff Locke expected to take the mound for the Tribe and RHP Tanner Roark scheduled to start for the Chiefs.

The contest will be televised on HTSN (Hometown Sports and News), available via cable or over-the-air on digital channel 6.2. The game will also be carried on WNDE 1260 AM-WFBQ-HD2, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
