Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Norfolk, VA - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (29-24) and Norfolk Tides (23-31) endured long travel days to get to the Harbor Park on Friday night for the first two games of a six game, four day series. The two extra games were scheduled as make up games for a rain out and a snow out when the Yankees hosted the Tides in mid-April in Batavia, New York. The first of the two scheduled games was played with the Tides picking up a 4-3 win in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mother Nature had other ideas for the second game of the twin bill which was postponed due to heavy rain and lightning.
Corbin Joseph made his Triple-A debut in game one of scheduled double header and made his presence felt on the second pitch he saw from Norfolk starter Jason Berken. Joseph hit the second pitch he faced in his first ever SWB Yankees at bat into the seats in right field for a opposite field solo homer and the Yankees led 1-0.
The Tides got the run back in their half of the first inning off SWB starter Ramon Ortiz on a solo homer from former Yankees Rule 5 pick Jamie Hoffman who got a ball up in the strong breeze out to left. The homer landed in the lawn seats beyond the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got the lead back in the top of the second inning on a two out base hit from Ramiro Pena scoring Ronnier Mustelier who led the inning off with a single and moved to second on Colin Curtis base hit to right. Pena's single to left drove home Mustelier from second just ahead of Hoffman's throw home and the Yankees led 2-1.
Norfolk scored the next two runs off Ortiz to take a 3-2 lead. Lew Ford's RBI single with one out and the infield in redirected off Ortiz's leg into shallow right scoring Carlos Rojas who led the inning off with a double. In the home half of the fourth Jai Miller hit his eighth homer of the season on a two strike offering from Ortiz over the wall in left to give the Tides their first lead of the night.
The Yankees tied the game in the fourth inning off Berken on a two out single to right field by Mustelier scoring Kevin Russo who led the inning off with a single. He was wild pitched to second and after Steve Pearce was hit by a pitch took third on a fielder's choice ground ball from Jack Cust that forced Pearce at second.
The game stayed tied at three until the bottom of the seventh, when Norfolk pushed the winning run across the plate against reliever Manny Delcarmen (LP, 1-3). Rojas drew a one out walk and pinch runner L.J. Hoes went first to third on a single to right center off the bat of Xavier Avery. Ford picked up the game winning hit on a single to right center and the Tides walked off 4-3 winners.
The Yankees and Tides will continue the series with a double header on Saturday night from Harbor Park with a 6:15 PM first pitch. Right hander Nelson Figueroa (3-1, 4.40) and right hander Tommy Hunter (1st start) will get the nod in the opening game for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Norfolk respectively. Neither team has announced a game two starter.
