Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, Calif. - With a man on first and no outs in the bottom of the ninth, shortstop Brandon Hicks connected on his sixth home run of the season, giving the River Cats a 4-2 walk-off win against the Fresno Grizzlies on Tuesday night at Raley Field.
Sacramento struck first, scoring once in the second when Anthony Recker drove in Chris Carter, and again in the third when a sacrifice fly from Carter drove in Yoenis Céspedes. Fresno scored twice in the sixth, tying the game at two. Neither team scored again until Hicks lifted his team to victory in the bottom of the ninth.
Céspedes finished 2-for-4 with a run in his second rehab game with Sacramento. Anthony Recker went 3-for-4 in his 2012 River Cats debut, while Hicks finished 1-for-3 with the game-winning two-run home run. River Cats starter A.J. Griffin gave up two unearned runs on five hits with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched for the no-decision. Sean Doolittle, Pedro Figueroa and Evan Scrbiner combined to pitch 3.2 shutout innings, with Scribner picking up his second victory of the year.
Fresno starter Eric Hacker gave up two earned runs in six innings in a no-decision. Reliever Dan Otero was tagged with the loss, giving up the game-winner after two innings of work.
The walk-off home run is the third of the year for the River Cats. Josh Donaldson and Derek Norris each had one against Omaha in back-to-back games on May 8 and 9 at Raley Field. The victory puts the Cats 2.5 games behind Fresno for first place in all of the PCL.
Manny Ramirez is expected to be placed on the River Cats 25-man roster on Wednesday, May 30-his 40th birthday-for the second game of the series.
Game two comes on Wednesday at12:05 p.m. for a Nine Innings at Noon Business Person Special presented by yp.com. River Cats righty Travis Banwart (3-2, 4.97 ERA) will take on Shawn Sanford (0-1, 0.00 ERA) of the Grizzlies.
