RANGERS INK OSWALT

Three-time All-Star Roy Oswalt signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers late Tuesday night. Oswalt will be assigned to Round Rock and "" pending a physical "" could pitch as early as Saturday when the Express begin a four-game series against the Albuquerque Isotopes at The Dell Diamond. Oswalt is no stranger to The Dell Diamond. He was 11-4 with a 1.94 ERA (28 ER/129.2 IP) in 18 starts and one relief appearance with Round Rock in 2000 when the Express were the Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. Oswalt finished the season with two complete games and 141 strikeouts against 22 walks.

BRAD NELSON: ROAD WARRIOR

Brad Nelson is 10-for-22 (.455) on the current road trip, hitting safely in all five games with three multiple-hit outings, four homers, 12 RBI, a double, three walks and nine runs scored. He has homered in four consecutive games, tying the franchise record. Luke Scott homered in four straight games July 19-22, 2005 (five homers), and Brooks Conrad equaled the feat July 31-Aug. 3, 2007 (five homers). Nelson has scored in seven straight road games and produced at least one RBI in six consecutive road games, including a career-high six Sunday at Nashville. He has hit safely in 18 consecutive road games, the PCL's longest streak this season; he is 30-for-75 (.400) in those games with seven homers, 20 RBI, seven doubles and 24 runs scored. Nelson has not gone hitless in consecutive games since a three-game spell April 19-21. He has hit safely in 29 of 32 games since, enjoying hitting streaks of 11 games and nine games in that time.

BORBON PLACED ON DISABLED LIST

Julio Borbon was placed on the seven-day disabled list Tuesday (right groin). Borbon left Sunday's game at Nashville after legging out a second-inning leadoff single. His disabled list stint comes with a 15-game hitting streak intact. Val Majewski, who played 33 games with the Express last season, was assigned to Round Rock from Double-A Frisco prior to tonight's game. Majewski hit .250 (19-for-76) with one home run and five RBI in 21 games with the RoughRiders. He was 3-for-5 with his lone home run and two RBI Monday at Northwest Arkansas in his most recent game.

USA BASEBALL CONNECTION

Express third baseman Tommy Mendonca and Memphis Redbirds shortstop Ryan Jackson were teammates on the 2008 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Mendonca was a rising sophomore at Fresno State, and Jackson was a rising junior at the University of Miami. That team completed arguably the best summer in the history of Collegiate National Team, going 24-0 and winning the FISU World Championship. Mendonca was 4-for-4 in the Gold Medal game, a 1-0 victory over Japan. Other members of that team included Stephen Strasburg (Nationals), Mike Leake (Reds) and Mike Minor (Braves).

CAPTAIN KIRKMAN

2010 Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year Michael Kirkman has re-established himself as one of the PCL's top starters over the past month. After starting the season in the bullpen, Kirkman slid into the Express rotation April 20. He worked three scoreless innings against Omaha in his first start, but was rocked for eight runs (seven earned) over 2.1 innings April 26 at Oklahoma City in his next start. However, Kirkman has been solid as a rock since the calendar flipped to May. He is 4-0 with a 3.48 ERA (12 ER/31.0 IP) in six May starts, holding the opponent to three or fewer earned runs in each start. Kirkman also has limited opponents to a .189 average (20-for-106) in that time with 9.58 strikeouts per nine innings. Opponents are 3-for-21 (.143) against Kirkman this season with runners in scoring position and two outs. However, they are 4-for-6 against him with the bases loaded.

KEY NUMBERS TELL THE STORY

Round Rock is 6-14 since blowing a 9-5 lead in the ninth inning May 9 at Salt Lake. The Express were 17-16 prior to that loss, the only point at which they were over .500 this season. Round Rock has been outscored 145-121 over the last 20 games, surrendering double-digit runs five times. Express pitchers have a 6.78 ERA (130 ER/172.2 IP) in that time. The staff has allowed at least one home run in 16 of the last 17 games (26 homers). A closer look into the numbers shows the Express are hitting .203 (25-for-123) with runners in scoring position in the 14 losses and .438 (35-for-80) in the six wins. Conversely, opponents are hitting .313 (50-for-160) with runners in scoring position in the 14 Express losses and .160 (8-for-50) in Round Rock's six wins.

"HOME" RUNS SCARCE

In stark contrast to last season, The Dell Diamond has not been a launching pad for the Express. Round Rock averages 0.71 homers per game through 24 home dates this season. The Express have not homered in six of their last seven home games. Conversely, Round Rock averages 1.52 homers in 28 road games, including a season-high five May 8 at Salt Lake. The Express have homered in 15 of their last 17 road games, including streaks of nine and five games (current). Round Rock has homered in all but six road games this season, clubbing at least two homers 12 times. Meanwhile, the Express have four multiple-homer games at The Dell Diamond. Last season, Round Rock averaged 1.46 home runs per game at The Dell Diamond and 0.97 homers per game on the road. Teams have combined to score 9.88 runs per game at The Dell Diamond this season as opposed to the 11.90 average in 2011.

IT'S A LOADED QUESTION

Round Rock is hitting .345 (20-for-58) with the bases loaded. The Express are 10-for-18 (.545) with the bases loaded since May 21, collecting six bases-loaded hits over the last two games. Mike Bianucci, Julio Borbon, Matt Kata and Tommy Mendonca lead the team with three bases-loaded hits each. Dusty Brown has drawn three walks and produced one sacrifice fly in four bases-loaded plate appearances. Meanwhile, opposing batters are 21-for-51 (.412) with the bases loaded, including five grand slams. Opponents are 17-for-38 (.447) with the bases loaded since April 21, including a 5-for-5 series by Oklahoma City (April 26-29).
