Zephyrs Slow Down Storm Chasers
May 26, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) Omaha Storm Chasers
Metairie, LA - Matt Dominguez homered and drove in four runs to support eight strong innings from Tom Koehler as New Orleans dumped Omaha, 9-2, in the second of four meetings Saturday evening at Zephyr Field. The Storm Chasers had a three-game win streak snapped and fell to 30-20 in their most lopsided loss of the campaign. After the two teams went into the seventh inning Friday night before the first run was scored, the hosts wasted no time jumping on Mike Montgomery for a pair of runs in the first on Mike Cervenak's sacrifice fly and a run-scoring hit by Luke Montz, who went 3-for-4.
The Storm Chasers got on the board in the third on a fielding error by Nick Green that allowed Anthony Seratelli to score. However, in the next at-bat, both Wil Myers and hitting coach Tommy Gregg were ejected for arguing balls and strikes and the rally fizzled. The Zephyrs responded in the bottom of the frame on Dominguez's three-run shot off the left field foul pole that pushed the margin to 5-1. The highly-regarded third baseman has hit six of his 16 homers at the Triple-A level against Omaha.
The visitors got a run back in the fourth on an RBI hit by David Lough but New Orleans countered in the fifth with an RBI double from Montz and a run-producing single by Dominguez that made it a 7-2 contest. Sergio Pedroza was then hit by a pitch and that spelled the end of the night for Montgomery, who took the loss after he was charged with seven runs on eight hits while walking four and fanning only one. Gaby Sanchez increased the lead to 8-2 in the seventh with a lead-off long ball, his first since being sent back to the minor leagues.
Koehler allowed only three hits, walked two, struck out six and set down the last 15 batters he faced en route to his fifth win of the season. The New Orleans right-hander put together his longest outing of the season five days after allowing eight runs and getting knocked out in the third inning by Reno.
The series continues Sunday afternoon with Omaha left-hander Ryan Verdugo making the start against New Orleans right-hander J.D. Martin. Coverage of the game gets underway at 1:40 pm and can be heard locally on AM 1180 and online at omahastormchasers.com.
