Iowa Cubs News Release
Memphis, TN - The Iowa Cubs (21-37) connected on four solo home runs in a 6-4 win over the Memphis Redbirds (17-32) at Auto Zone Park tonight. The Cubs lead this series 2-0 and have now won consecutive games at Auto Zone Park for the first time since 2009.
Steve Clevenger got the Cubs started with the first home run in the top of the first inning off Redbirds' starter Shelby Miller. Clevenger added a double in the third inning and was 3-for-3 before coming out in the seventh inning as he continues on his Major League rehab assignment.
The Redbirds tied the game in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Zach Cox, but the Cubs reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth when Brett Jackson belted a Miller pitch for his fifth home run of the season.
The Redbirds rallied against Cubs' starter Frankie De La Cruz in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jamie Romak drove in two with a base hit to left and Eugenio Velez also scored on a throwing error by Ty Wright in left field. De La Cruz would finish the inning and was charged with four runs (three earned) on four hits. He walked four and struck out five.
The Cubs responded immediately in the top of the sixth. With a man on first and one out, the Redbirds brought in lefty Nick Greenwood to replace Miller. After a groundout, Jackson lined an RBI triple and then scored on a base hit by Wright to tie the game.
The Cubs went back on top when Anthony Rizzo led off the top of the eighth with his league-leading 17th home run of the season off Sam Freeman. The Cubs added a final insurance run when Josh Vitters homered off Francisco Salas in the ninth.
Ryan Rowland-Smith (1-0) held the Redbirds scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings and was credited with the win. Nate Robertson walked a man in the eighth, but faced the minimum thanks to a double play. Mike MacDougal issued a two-out walk, but finished the ninth to earn his first save with the Cubs. It was his first save since last season on May 11 against the Chicago White Sox while pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Freeman (0-2) was charged with the loss for Memphis.
The Cubs and Redbirds continue this series tomorrow night at 6:05. RH Chris Volstad (1-0, 6.00) is scheduled to start for the Cubs against LH Nick Additon (1-3, 5.32) for the Redbirds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 5:45.
