New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Tom Koehler held the Omaha Storm Chasers to three hits over eight innings, leading the New Orleans Zephyrs to a 9-2 victory on Saturday night at Zephyr Field.
Koehler (5-4) bounced back from a rocky start in Reno on Monday where he lasted just 1 2/3 innings to pick up his fifth win in his last six starts. The Zephyrs' offense provided him with plenty of run support in the early going.
Jose Duarte led off the bottom of the first with a walk, and Nick Green and Gaby Sanchez singled to load the bases with one out. Mike Cervenak hit an RBI sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Duarte, and Luke Montz plated Green on a single down third base line for a 2-0 lead.
Anthony Seretelli tabbed the first run for Omaha in the third inning after leading off with a single. Kevin Kouzmanoff walked and Cody Clark grounded out. With two outs, Derrick Robinson reached base on an error by Green, scoring Seretelli.
Cervenak started a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame when he drew a walk, followed by a double down the third base line by Montz. Matt Dominguez then blasted a long ball over the left field wall to increase the lead 5-1.
The Storm Chasers answered back in the fourth when Clint Robinson walked and moved to third on a single by Tony Abreu. David Lough later plated Robinson with a single to right field.
Koehler then retired the next 15 Omaha batters, earning the win for New Orleans in a season-high eight-inning effort. He scattered just three hits, allowing two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts.
The Zephyrs put up another four runs, including a homer to left field from Gaby Sanchez in the seventh inning.
Montz led the Z's going 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored. Dominguez had two hits, including a home run, and four RBI, while Sanchez also added two hits and an RBI on the night.
Mike Montgomery (2-2) took the loss for Omaha, giving up seven runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
The Zephyrs and Storm Chasers will resume the series Sunday at 2pm. Righty J.D. Martin will get the start for New Orleans, as southpaw Ryan Verdugo takes the mound for Omaha.
