Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, Iowa - The eight game losing streak for the Clinton LumberKings (13-26) is history. The LumberKings kicked off the home stand in a positive way with a hard-fought, 5-4 victory over the Peoria Chiefs (18-22) at Ashford University Field on Wednesday night.

Peoria got out to an early lead on a double off the wall by Ryan Cuneo that scored Paul Hoilman in the second inning. The Chiefs would get two more in the fourth with the first coming from another run-scoring hit by Cuneo. Brett Shankin then struck out Anthony Giansanti for the second out of the inning but Taylor Davis made it 3-0 with a RBI base hit. Pin-Chieh Chen followed with a single to load the bases. With Zeke DeVoss at the plate, Shankin uncorked a pitch that skipped away from Steve Baron. Cuneo took off for the plate but Baron recovered and got the ball to Shankin who applied the tag at the plate to end the inning and limit the damage.

The blunder proved costly for Peoria as Clinton came back with a vengeance in the fifth inning. Guillermo Pimentel collected his second hit of the night to lead off the frame. After Anthony Phillips flied to right, Bryan Brito reached on an error by Peoria shortstop Wes Darvill. It opened the floodgates as four of the next five batters reached as Mario Yepez came through with a big two-out, two-run single to take a 4-3 lead.

Peoria tied it in the sixth inning on the third RBI hit of the night by Ryan Cuneo. The lead didn't last for long as Phillips reached on a single in the bottom of the sixth, stole second and moved to third after the throw went into center field. He scored a moment later when Brito lifted a fly ball to right center to score Phillips.

Kyle Hunter worked in relief of Josh Corrales and was brilliant. The left-hander from Galesburg faced the minimum over the final three innings and struck out five Chiefs.

The two teams play the second game of the series Thursday night at Ashford University Field. Clinton sends right-hander Trevor Miller (1-2, 4.18) to the mound and the Chiefs counter with right-hander Jose Rosario (3-3, 4.50). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
