Two Sea Dogs Named to Eastern League All-Star Team

Portland, Maine-The Eastern League of Professional Clubs has announced the 2011 Eastern League season-ending All-Star Team. The 13-player roster features two Portland Sea Dogs' players. Will Middlebrooks has been named the Eastern League All-Star third baseman and Chih-Hsien Chiang as an outfielder. The team is voted on by respective Eastern League team managers and coaching staffs, sportswriters, radio and television broadcast personnel and other members of the media.

The Sea Dogs are one of only three teams to have multiple players selected to the All-Star team. The Harrisburg Senators, the Eastern League Western Division's first place team, has two representatives. While the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Eastern League Eastern Division's, top team placed three players. It is the first time since 2005 that the Sea Dogs have had more than one player named to the squad. The 2005 team featured three Sea Dogs; Jon Lester, Dustin Pedroia, and Hanley Ramirez.

Both Chiang and Middlebrooks participated in the Eastern League All-Star Game on July 13th in Manchester, New Hampshire as well as the XM Satellite Major League Baseball Futures Game in Phoenix, Arizona on July 10th.

Chiang appeared in 88 games for the Sea Dogs before being dealt at the trade deadline on July 31st in the deal that brought Erik Bedard to the Red Sox. At the time of the trade, Chiang was leading the Eastern League in batting average (.340, 109-for-321), RBI (76), doubles (37), extra-base hits (59), runs scored (68) and slugging percentage (.648) and had tallied four triples and 18 home runs. The 23 year-old was selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month for June and July.

The 6'2", 170 lb slugger began his Sea Dog career in 2010 and holds the franchise record for career doubles (72) and ranks fourth all-time in slugging percentage (.524), seventh in home runs (29), eighth in RBI (141) and tied for ninth in total bases (398). He holds the Sea Dogs franchise record with three grand slams. Chiang also joins Josh Reddick as the only Sea Dogs to homer in four straight games. A native of Taitung, Taiwan, Chiang was signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent on October 20, 2005.

Middlebrooks, 22 years-old, hit .302 (112-for-371) with 18 home runs and 80 RBI in 96 games for the Sea Dogs this season. He led the Eastern League with 80 RBI and ranked among the league leaders in several offensive categories including slugging percentage (.520- 5th), home runs (18- Tied 5th), and average (.302- 8th) when he was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket on August 19th. Baseball America rated Middlebrooks as the "Best Batting Prospect" in the Eastern League in 2011. Additionally, entering the season, Baseball America rated Middlebrooks as having the "Best Infield Arm" in the Red Sox farm system. The Texas native established a new franchise record for most RBI's in the month of July with 29. He was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.

The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field for the final homestand of the 2011 season; a four game Labor Day weekend series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays), kicking off with a 7:00 PM game on Friday, September 2nd. The Sea Dogs' 2011 campaign concludes on Monday, September 5th at 1:00 PM against the Fisher Cats.
