Chiefs use big inning to blow past Kernels, 7-1

Cedar Rapids, IA - Peoria scored five runs in the 6th inning and cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Kernels on Sunday afternoon. The Kernels scored the first run in the 3rd inning. Rolando Gomez was hit by a pitch and came home to score on a two-out RBI single by Ricky Alvarez, giving the Kernels a 1-0 lead. Kernels starter A.J Schugel held Peoria scoreless in five innings of work. He scattered three hits while striking out two and walking two.

Peoria sent 10 batters to the plate in the 6th inning against Kernels reliever Seth Fowler, and the Chiefs scored five runs on seven hits. A double by Greg Rohan scored Rubi Silva. Richard Jones crushed a double off the wall in straight away center field to score Ryan Cuneo and Rohan. Ben Klafczynski then lined a 2-run home run to left, giving Peoria a 5-1 lead. Seth Fowler (0-1) went one inning for the Kernels, allowing five runs on seven hits.

Starling Peralta (1-1) started for Peoria and picked up his first win. He went 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three and walking two. Peoria added single runs in the 8th and 9th inning. In the 8th inning, Jones singled to lead off the inning. He later scored on a RBI single by Klafczynski. In the 9th inning, Rubi Silva scored on a wild pitch by Kernels reliever Tyler Kehrer.

Donn Roach went one inning out of the bullpen, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out one and walked none. Kehrer went two innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out three and walking one.
