Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - George Jensen improved to 7-2 with five solid innings on Friday night, leading the Hot Rods (1-0, 42-29) to a 5-2 win over the Dayton Dragons (0-1, 35-36). The victory opens the second half of the season for the playoff-bound Hot Rods, improving their record to 25-11 at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Bowling Green jumped on top with a first-inning run, once again produced by the top of the order. Cody Rogers and Robby Price singled, putting runners at the corners against Daniel Renken (L; 2-8). Phil Wunderlich stepped up and made it 1-0 with a base hit to right field, picking up his 53rd RBI of the season.
After Jensen allowed his only runs in the second - a two-run homer from Donald Lutz - the Hot Rods re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Luke Bailey tied it with a one-out solo home run to right-center, his sixth of the season. With two outs, Rogers was hit by a pitch, stole second, and then scored his second run of the game on an infield error to make it 3-2.
Jensen worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third, retiring three in a row after loading them up. He then cruised through the next two frames to complete his five-inning workload. He allowed two runs on four hits, struck out six, and walked two before turning things over to the Hot Rods bullpen.
The Hot Rods offense added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out rally. Rogers once again reached, this time on an error, taking second on a walk to Robby Price. After a groundout, Julio Cedeno laced a double to left field to plate two runs and push the lead to 5-2.
The bullpen took over at that point with Nate Garcia, Austin Hubbard, and Chris Rearick combining for four shutout frames, allowing just two hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.
Wunderlich led the 11-hit attack with another three-hit game, boosting his average to a team-high .297. Cedeno had two hits and two RBI while Rogers added three more runs to his league-leading total of 57.
The two teams play the middle game of the series on Saturday night at 7:05 PM. The game will feature a special pre-game concert from local country music recording artist Shaylin McGuire. After the game, the Hot Rods will launch post-game fireworks. Gates open at 5:30 PM for Season Ticket holders; 6 PM for the general public. For tickets, visit www.bghotrods.com.
The pitching match-up on Saturday features LHP Braulio Lara making his first start of the second half against Dayton RHP Kyle Lotzkar. You can follow the game with Tom Gauthier and Josh Weinstock beginning at 6:40 PM on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
