Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Beloit, WI - The Kernels scored four runs in the 9th inning, but the rally fell one run short as the Snappers snuck by for the 6-5 win on Wednesday night. Beloit went into the 9th inning with a 6-1 lead over the Kernels, but the Snappers used three pitchers in the inning to secure the win. Andrei Lobanov struck out Kernel Jeremy Cruz to begin the inning. Lobanov was then replaced by Ben Tootle. Tootle walked the bases loaded and hit Jesus Campos, cutting the Snappers lead to 6-2 with Daniel Eichelberger coming up to the plate.
Jose Gonzalez came to the mound, and Eichelberger lashed a bases clearing double to left center that cut the Snappers lead to 6-5. However, Eichelberger was thrown out a 3rd base for the 2nd out in the inning. With no runners on Travis Witherspoon singled, but Gonzalez struck out Rolando Gomez to end the game. B.J. Hermsen (5-6) was strong in his start for the Snappers. He went seven innings and allowed one run on seven hits while striking out three and walking none. Max Russell (4-6) took the loss on the mound for the Kernels. He went six innings and allowed four runs on four hits while striking out six and walking one.
The Snappers scored three times in the 3rd inning against Max Russell. Wang-Wei Lin led off with a single to left field. Andrew Leer followed with a bunt single to put two runners on. Both came home on a double by Nate Roberts, giving Beloit a 2-0 lead. Roberts later scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Daniel Ortiz, making the score 3-0. Kernels second baseman Wes Hatton homered off Hermsen to lead off the 5th inning, cutting Beloit's lead to 3-1. Beloit's Jairo Perez followed Hatton by drilling a solo home run to left center in the 6th inning, extending the Snappers lead to 4-1. Manny Correa went one inning and allowed no runs on one hit for the Kernels in relief.
The Snappers scored two unearned runs in the 8th inning. Daniel Ortiz walked, Perez singled, and Lance Ray reached on an error by Kernels third baseman Jesus Campos to load the bases with one out. On a potential inning-ending double play ball off the bat of Kyle Knudson the Kernels recorded an out at 2nd base, but a throwing error by Kernels shortstop Rolando Gomez allowed two Snappers to score, making it a 6-1 game. Daniel Tillman went one inning in relief for the Kernels and allowed two unearned runs on one hit. Jose Gonzalez picked up his seventh save for the Snappers in 0.2 innings out of the bullpen.
