Senators Use Late Runs to Sweep Doubleheader

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets dropped both ends of a doubleheader against the Harrisburg Senators, falling 6-5 in game one and dropping game two by a 7-6 score tonight at NYSEG Stadium.

After a scoreless first inning by B-Mets starter Jeurys Familia in game one, the B-Mets drew first blood against Harrisburg starter Brad Peacock. Josh Satin doubled off the right-hander and came home to score on Bubba Bell's single.

Following a Senators run in the second, Binghamton regained the lead when Raul Reyes singled home Allan Dykstra in the bottom of the second.

Trailing by one in the fourth, Bill Rhinehart gave Harrisburg the lead with a towering two-run home run over the fence in right-centerfield off Familia. The drive was his tenth of the season.

The B-Mets returned serve in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jordany Valdespin sent a pinch-hit home run to right field to tie the game at three. It was the first pinch-hit homer of the year for Binghamton.

Seventh inning meltdowns would be the theme for the B-Mets tonight. The wheels fell off for reliever Eric Niesen in the final frame. The left-hander walked six and allowed three runs against nine batters. Harrisburg managed to take the three-run advantage without the benefit of a single hit.

The B-Mets scratched out two runs in the bottom half of the frame against Zach Zinicola. However, the rally would fall a run short.

In the nightcap, the B-Mets jumped on top again in the first inning. Following a one-out walk to Jon Malo, Josh Satin greeted Harrisburg starter Garrett Mock with a long drive over the left field fence. The homer, Satin's seventh of the year, gave the home team an early two-run lead.

Bubba Bell followed step with Satin and shot an opposite field dinger that barely squeaked over the left field fence. It was the first time this season the B-Mets have stroked back-to-back home runs.

Satin was not done on the evening. He extended the lead to four runs with a solo shot off Mock in the third.

On the flip side of the field, Binghamton sent Roy Merritt to the mound for his first professional start. The left-hander got the job done, allowing just four hits over four shutout innings.

Down by four, the Senators started their comeback against Ricky Brooks in the fifth. Alex Valdez stroked a one-out double to right-centerfield, Bill Rhinehart stepped to the plate to pinch-hit for Mock. Rhinehart, who homered in game one, picked up his second dinger to cut the deficit in half.

The B-Mets manufactured a run in the fifth off Cory VanAllen on a walk, sac bunt, and sacrifice fly to extend the lead to three.

Brooks posted a scoreless sixth and handed the ball to Erik Turgeon in the seventh. In search of his third save of the year, Turgeon started off on the wrong foot. He allowed consecutive doubles to Devin Ivany and Alex Valdez to lead off the frame.

Harrisburg cut the margin to one with back-to-back sac flies by Jonathan Tucker and Rhinehart.

One strike away from nailing down the save, Turgeon gave up a two-out single to Steve Lombardozzi. With the tying run aboard and a full count, pinch-hitter Derek Norris crushed his ninth home run of the season to left field to give the Senators a one-run lead. Chris Rahl capped the five-run seventh with a solo home run to right.

Binghamton put up a fight in the bottom half of the frame by scratching out a run against Carlos Martinez. Representing the tying run, Allan Dykstra was stranded at first base when Pat McCoy struck out pinch-hitter Salomon Manriquez to end the game.

The B-Mets (18-38) continue their series against the Senators tomorrow night at 6:35pm. RHP Tobi Stoner (0-2, 12.60) will make his third start with the B-Mets against RHP Erik Davis (2-1, 3.63). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
