Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- A night after handing the Reading Phillies their worst defeat of the season, the Phillies responded with a 13-4 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (12-24) Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. Matt Rizzotti belted two home runs including a three run blast in the seventh inning to lead the Phillies (23-16) to the win.
Portland starter Michael Lee held the Reading offense to two runs on three hits in five innings of work as the Sea Dogs took a 4-2 lead into the sixth inning. However, the Portland bullpen would struggle yielding 11 unanswered runs over the final four innings.
Cesar Cabral (0-1) made his Double-A debut in relief of Lee. Cabral, promoted from Single-A Salem on Tuesday where he was 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA, struggled in his first Double-A outing. The 22 year-old righty surrendered five runs (four earned) on five hits in 1.1 innings of work suffering the loss.
Carlos Rivero, 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored, delivered a RBI single in the sixth off Cabral to bring the Phillies within a run at 4-3. Freddy Galvis chipped-in with a RBI double in the seventh to tie the game at four and Rizzotti provided the knock-out punch, a three run homer to take a 7-4 lead.
Santo Luis would relieve Cabral and the minor league veteran did not fare any better surrendering five runs on five hits in 1.2 innings. Caleb Clay closed out the game pitching one inning and allowing a run.
Tyler Brummett (2-1) picked-up his second win of the season pitching 2.2 innings of relief of Ryan Edell holding the Sea Dogs offense scoreless on two hits. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Galvis led off the game with a triple off Michael Lee and would score on a Stephen Susdorf sacrifice fly to center to give Reading a quick 1-0 lead. Portland responded with a run of their own in the first when Tim Federowicz drove-in his 20th run of the season; a single scoring Che-Hsuan Lin.
Ryan Lavarnway smashed his team leading seventh home run in the fourth inning. Chih-Hsien Chiang collected a RBI double in the fifth and Alex Hassan picked-up his team leading 25th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly scoring Jon Hee as Portland took a short lived 4-2 lead before Reading exploded for 11 runs over the final four innings.
Alex Hassan, the league's leading hitter (.368) was held hitless for just the seventh time this season.
The Sea Dogs and Phillies conclude the series Thursday afternoon at 12:00 noon at Hadlock Field. Sea Dogs' right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson (4-2, 3.57) gets the start for Portland. He will be opposed by Reading righty B.J. Rosenberg (0-0, 1.83).
