Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - In the final regular season home game of the 2010 season, the Cardinals hosted the Arkansas Travelers and sent their hottest pitcher, Brian Broderick to the mound in search of his 7th straight win.

From the outset, both starting pitchers dominated the game as both Broderick and Travs' starter Ryan Brasier did not allow a run in the first two innings. In the 3rd, the Travelers would break that scoreless streak as Abel Nieves led off with a triple to right field and scored on an RBI ground out from Efren Navarro to give Arkansas a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals would respond in the bottom of the 3rd as Tony Cruz, just activated from the disabled list, reached on an error to get the inning going. After Daryl Jones popped up to second, Jermaine Curtis reached on another Traveler's error to put runners at first at second. Antone DeJesus followed with a walk to load the bases to load the bases with one out. Pete Kozma then drew a walk to force in the Cardinals first run to tie the game 1-1. Matt Carpenter and Andrew Brown each struck out to leave the bases loaded to end the inning with an even score.

Springfield threatened in the 5th as Daryl Jones led off with a single, the first hit of the game for the Cards, and moved all the way to third on two straight bunts. With two outs, Pete Kozma popped up to the catcher to end the inning with the Cardinals leaving a runner at third base keeping the game tied 1-1.

Brian Broderick worked his way out of trouble in the 6th as the Travelers got back to back singles to put runners on first and third with nobody out. Charlton Jimerson then bounced into a double play, but the ball was hit sharply enough to keep Roberto Lopez at third base. With two outs, Ryan Mount flied out to shallow center field to keep the even at 1-1. Broderick's outing would end after the 6th as he allowed just a run on nine hits with three strikeouts.

The Cardinals mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the 6th against Brasier as Aaron Luna reached first base on a fielding error by Abel Nieves and moved to second on a misplay in right field by Jeremy Moore. With two strikes on Chris Swauger, the outfielder launched a two-run homer to give Springfield their first lead of the game, 3-1.

That was all the offense Springfield needed as Ramon Delgado pitched two scoreless innings and Adam Reifer pitched a perfect 9th to secure the 3-1 win and complete the three game sweep of the Travelers.

The Cardinals finished out their regular season home schedule in style with three straight wins! Thank you to all of the Springfield Cardinals fans out there who continue to show so much support to their Redbirds here in Springfield!

Springfield will hit the road to finish out the 2010 regular season beginning with the Tulsa Drillers at ONEOK Field on Tuesday night. In game one of the four game series, the Cardinals will send left hander Ryan Kulik (7-3) to the mound against left hander Keith Weiser (9-8) for the Drillers. Game time is at 7:05pm.

The Cardinals playoffs hopes are still alive and well as they have secured the second best record in the North Division and the only way the Cardinals would not go to the post season is if the Tulsa Drillers win the second half outright. Tulsa is in NW Arkansas for a three game series and their game was not yet complete when the Cardinals finished up their victory over Arkansas.

Should the Cardinals make the playoffs, they would host games three and four of the five game divisional series at Hammons Field on September 10th and 11th. For ticket information please visit the Hammons Field Ticket Office, online at www.springfieldcardinals.com or call (417) 863-2143.
