August 6, 2010 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
Pawtucket's starting pitcher Kris Johnson never got in a rhythm and the Yankees' made quick work of the lanky righty in a 9-5 victory.
The PawSox starter allowed five runs in four innings of work to absorb his tenth loss of the season. Johnson, whose record drops to 4-10 on the season, allowed five earned runs on a walk and seven hits in his start. Of the seven hits, the big blast came from right fielder Colin Curtis to send a competitive 3-0 game into a more comfortable 5-0 lead for the Yankees. It was Curtis' first homerun in 137 at-bats- and 39 games- at the triple-A level.
In the bottom of the seventh Pawtucket scored three times to cut the lead to two, but Ryan Shealy, the go-ahead run, stranded two runners after grounding out to third base. In the inning the PawSox loaded the bases with one out when Josh Reddick's double cleared them. The hit off Royce Ring scored Yamaico Navarro, Dusty Brown and Gil Velazquez, but Reddick was caught between second base and third base trying to stretch the hit to a triple. After the PawSox cut the lead to two, the Yankees responded with three runs of their own an inning later to stretch their lead back to five, 9-4.
Despite loading the bases and bringing the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth inning a leadoff, solo homerun by Reddick in the last frame capped the scoring at five runs for Pawtucket. Reddick went 3-for-5 on the game with a double and homerun, and he is in the midst of a 7-game hitting streak. He is 18-for-33 (.545 BA) in that time. In the sixth inning Jack Hannahan's deposited a homerun deep into the Yankees' bullpen in right field for the PawSox first run of the night. The homerun for Hannahan was his second for Pawtucket this season.
Santo Luis was the first man out of the bullpen in relief of Johnson. Luis was placed on the 7-day disabled list July 24 with a right hamstring strain and this outing was just his fourth appearance on the season.
In each of his previous three outings Luis has allowed at least one run and in two innings of work Friday night Luis allowed one run. On the season Luis now has a 17.47 ERA in 5.2 innings of work.
Pawtucket will face Scranton Wilkes-Barre in game three of a four-game series Friday evening. The first pitch of Saturday's game will be at 6:05 p.m. and it will be Ramon Ramirez (2-2, 5.15 ERA) for Pawtucket taking on the Yankees' David Phelps (1-2, 3.98 ERA).
