Ellsbury and PawSox come up short against the Bulls

July 31, 2010 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

The PawSox returned home minus the streaking Mike Lowell, who completed his rehab stint this week, but plus Jacoby Ellsbury, who took the field at McCoy to a standing ovation Saturday night. Though he went 2-4, the PawSox fell 5-1 to the Durham Bulls.

Ellsbury singled to left to lead off the game and then scored after Daniel Nava walked and Ryan Shealy reached on an error by right fielder Elliot Johnson. Ellsbury flew to center in the second, singled but was stranded in the fifth, and popped to third in the sixth before leaving the game.

Though the PawSox had nine hits total, they managed no further scoring after their first-inning tally. Daniel Nava and Aaron Bates also had two hits apiece, but none of the nine hits were for extra bases. Virgil Vasquez went 5.1 innings, giving up just the one unearned run to improve to 6-1.

Mark Holliman (0-3) lasted just two-plus innings for the PawSox, giving up four runs in the second and coming out after walking the leadoff man in the third. Fabio Castro gave up just one run in four innings in relief, and Rich Hill mopped up with three shutout innings.

Elliot Johnson led the charge for Durham, atoning for his error with three hits and two RBI. Chris Richard also had two hits, and Dan Johnson hit his 30th home run of the year as part of the four-run second.

The PawSox saw Ryan Kalish and Dustin Richardson head up to the big leagues earlier Saturday, and both saw action in the 5-4 Red Sox win over Detroit. Kalish started in left and went 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Richardson walked one and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief.

The PawSox return to the field Sunday at 1:05 as Ramon Ramirez (2-2, 5.37) takes on Heath Phillips (8-6, 3.82) of the Bulls.
