June 18, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- Ray Chang's two out RBI single scoring Che-Hsuan Lin from first base gave the Portland Sea Dogs an 8-7 walk-off win over the Akron Aeros Friday night at Hadlock Field in front of 5,616 fans. The Sea Dogs improve to 35-31, while the Aeros fall to 33-34.
Two of the top pitching prospects in the Eastern League squared off against each other at Hadlock Field in a match up of two Red Sox top draft picks Casey Kelly for Portland and Nick Hagadone for Akron, yet the two teams combined for 15 runs and 24 hits.
Akron touched-up 2008 Red Sox first round draft pick, Kelly, for five runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings. Akron wasted no time getting to Kelly, scoring two runs in the first inning. John Drennen and Jason Head each had a RBI single. Chih-Hsien Chiang threw out Drennen at home to end the inning and prevent further damage.
Portland responded in the third scoring four runs on three hits and two walks. Lin and Luis Exposito (2-for-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) collected RBI singles, while Chiang added a RBI double as Portland took a 4-2 lead.
The lead quickly fell out of the Sea Dogs favor. Jordan Henry had a RBI single, then Jason Kipnis blasted a two run shot in to the U.S. Cellular Pavilion to give the Aeros a 5-4 lead. The home run ended the night for Kelly.
Hagadone, the Red Sox 2007 first pick, now with the Indians organization, only lasted 3.1 innings in his fourth Double-A start. Hagadone yielded five runs on six hits, walking four and striking out two.
Paolo Espino came on to replace Hagadone. Exposito greeted him with a sac fly tying the game at five, as Exposito picked-up his team leading 48th RBI of the season.
Anthony Rizzo was able to break the tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a RBI doubled to left field scoring Exposito.
Eammon Portice came on in relief of Kelly. He was able to retire 10 of 11 batters in 3.1 innings pitched.
With Portice's night done, Bryce Cox entered the game. Cox gave up a RBI double to Tim Fedroff (2-for-5, 2 2B), then uncorked a wild pitch that tied the game at seven.
Cox picked up the win for Portland. His record moves to 1-4. Aguilar was the losing pitcher, making him 1-2 on the season.
The Sea Dogs and Aeros continue their series tomorrow night at 6:00 PM, as Stephen Fife (3-1, 3.70) faces off against right hander Alex White (2-2, 1.47) at Hadlock Field.
