Altoona Curve News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Altoona Curve used a four-run eighth inning to put away the Richmond Flying Squirrels in a series-opening, 7-2, victory in front of 9,006 on Friday night at The Diamond.
An inning-opening error on Altoona shortstop Chase d'Arnaud helped the Squirrels strike first against right-hander Jared Hughes in the second inning. Michael Ambort reached on the miscue and scored when Clay Timpner and Skyler Stromsmoe followed with back-to-back singles. Stromsmoe registered an RBI as he put Richmond in front, 1-0.
The Curve evened things up in the fourth, getting to right-hander Daryl Maday for the first time. Maday walked d'Arnaud to start the inning and Josh Harrison bunted him to second base. Jordy Mercer followed with an RBI single to tie the game, 1-1.
Altoona pulled ahead for the first time in the fifth when again Maday opened the inning with a walk. Alex Presley received the free pass and was singled to second by Miles Durham. The runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt and Presley scored to give the Curve a 2-1 lead when d'Arnaud singled into center field.
A pair of errors charged to Richmond second baseman Ryan Lormand in the sixth inning allowed Altoona to tack an unearned run onto their lead. Lormand misplayed a ground ball from Matt Hague with one out that allowed Hague to reach. Hector Gimenez followed with a double to the right-field corner to put runners on the corners. The Squirrels elected to load the bases with an intentional walk to Presley. Maday struck out Durham and the induced a soft-ground ball to Lormand that he couldn't handle. His second miscue allowed Hague to come in for a 3-1 lead.
Maday (8-3) departed to his third loss of the season following the inning. He allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits.
Hughes worked through seven innings, matching his longest outing the season. He reclaimed the league-lead with his ninth win of the season, allowing just a lone unearned run on five hits.
Altoona put the ballgame away with a four-run eighth inning. Three of the runs were charged to Richmond left-hander Andy Sisco. Mercer capped the inning and the scoring for Altoona in the ballgame with a two-run single. Mercer finished the game with three runs batted in.
Stromsmoe added a second RBI single to plate Timpner with the final run of the ballgame in the Richmond ninth inning.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday at 6:35 PM at The Diamond. RHP David Mixon (7-3, 3.08) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Justin Wilson (5-4, 3.02) for Altoona.
