New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- David Cooper went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs, Adrian Martin earned a win for the second straight game, and Tim Collins notched his second save in as many nights as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats downed the Erie SeaWolves, 7-4, on Friday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium to reclaim sole possession of first place in the Eastern League's Eastern Division.
The Fisher Cats (42-26) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Cooper smashed a two-run homer to center off spot starter Ramon Garcia.
New Hampshire tacked on three more runs in the third on Manny Mayorson's two-run double off Garcia and an RBI single from Shawn Bowman (1-for-3, 2 BB, RBI, R) off reliever Rob Waite for a 5-0 lead.
Garcia (0-4) was reached for five runs on four hits and one walk in 2.1 innings to suffer the loss.
Erie (28-38) knocked Bobby Bell out of the box in the top of the fourth with four runs on five extra-base hits. Ben Johnson (1-for-4, HR) and Deik Scram (1-for-2, HR, 2 BB) led off the stanza with back-to-back homers and, one out later, Ryan Bourqin (1-for-4, HR) added the third solo shot of the inning. Bell, who surrendered four runs on five hits and two walks in 3.1 innings, departed after yielding a double to Andy Bouchie (1-for-4, 2B, R), who scored when Justin Henry (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) doubled off Martin, trimming the Fishers' lead to 5-4.
The Fisher Cats built the lead to 6-4 in the fifth when Darin Mastroianni (2-for-5, 2B, 2 R, 2 SB) reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on Rob Waite's wild pitch, stole third base and scored on a fielding error by shortstop Cale Iorg.
Cooper's second homer of the game, and 10th of the season, came off left-hander Jay Voss leading off the eighth, providing the final margin.
Martin (4-1) pitched 2.2 shutout innings, scattering two hits, walking one and fanning three to record the win.
Danny Farquhar pitched two scoreless frames before Collins struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save, pushing the Fisher Cats 16 games over .500 for the first time all season and, by virtue of Trenton's 1-0 loss in Binghamton on Friday night, allowing New Hampshire to leapfrog the Thunder by a ½ game in the division standings.
The Fisher Cats and the SeaWolves meet for the second game of their three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05pm. New Hampshire is slated to send right-hander Zach Stewart (4-1, 4.50) to the mound against Erie lefty Andy Oliver (5-4, 3.82). Fisher Cats Pre-Game begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
Saturday is Halloween Night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium, with pre-game trick-or-treating for the kids and a costume contest. Fans will play USA Subs Baseball Bingo during the game, and an Atlas Fireworks Show follows the game. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
