Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

First-year pitcher Brad Boxberger was named to the Carolina League All-Star Team. The league made the announcement this afternoon. Boxberger is 4-5 with a 3.20 ERA in 12 starts this season. He ranks ninth in the league in ERA and third with a 9.91 strikeout per nine innings ratio.

He set a season-high with 7 IP in a win at Salem, June 9. That was his first win since May 3 against Kinston. In the outing, he gave up five hits and one run (earned) and struck out five.

Boxberger made his professional debut with the Hillcats April 10, the second game of a doubleheader against Frederick. He threw five innings and gave up only two hits and one run (it was earned) while striking out seven. The strikeout total is still his season-high. He didn't get a decision, as the Hillcats lost in extra innings.

His first professional win came in his next start, April 16, also against Frederick. In five innings, Boxberger surrendered one hit and one earned run while striking out six.

He was drafted in the supplemental first round (43rd Overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft out of the University of Southern California. After the 2007 season he was named to the Rivals.com 2nd Team All-American.

Lynchburg, Potomac and Kinston each have one representative on the All-Star Team. Winston-Salem leads the way with seven total All-Stars. The Hillcats' 460 rival Salem has five representatives. Wilmington and All-Star game host Myrtle Beach each have three, and Carolina League North-leading Frederick has two.

Former Hillcats Catcher Devin Mesoraco hit .335 with 10 home runs and 31 RBI in 43 games in Lynchburg. Mesoraco is still third in the league in batting average, and tied for third in home runs. His .414 on-base percentage is also still good for third in the league. Because he was promoted to Double-A Carolina May 28, he was ineligible to be voted an all-star.

The 2010 California-Carolina League All-Star Game will be played June 22 at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach, SC.
