Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Drive (29-29) were unable to build on Saturday's impressive 14-4 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets (35-23), as they dropped an 8-1 decision to Augusta on Sunday. Interestingly, the Drive are 7-0 in their last seven series openers, but just 1-6 in the second game of each of their last seven series.
Augusta roughed up Drive starter Pete Ruiz (4-4), who gave up five runs on 11 hits in four innings. The GreenJackets opened the scoring with a two-out rally in the top of the first. Ryan Cavan and Chris Dominguez hit consecutive singles before Luke Anders lined a single of his own to right field, scoring Cavan for the game's first run.
Augusta then added three more runs in the top of the second, again with a two-out rally. After Daniel Cook was picked off first base following a walk, and Juan Martinez flied out to right, Evan Crawford tripled to left-centerfield. Nick Liles then brought Crawford home with a bunt single to third, and Ryan Lollis doubled in another run. Cavan then got another base hit to make the score 4-0.
The Drive got on the board in the bottom of that inning. After Michael Almanzar singled to left to lead off the frame and advanced to third on Reymond Fuentes' single, Augusta starter Jorge Bucardo induced a double-play grounder from Reynaldo Rodriguez. Almanzar, who went 2-for-4 on the day, scored on the play to make it 4-1.
However, that was all the offense Greenville could muster off Bucardo (5-2), who scattered just six hits over eight innings while giving up just the one run in the second inning and striking out six. Andy Reichard pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the game for the GreenJackets.
Meanwhile, the GreenJackets continued to tack on runs, scoring once in the fourth off Ruiz and then once again in the fifth off Jeremiah Bayer, who had come in to relieve Ruiz. Cavan, who finished 3-for-5 with two RBI, made it 5-1 in the fourth with a single that scored Crawford. Crawford, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored, had led off the frame with a double. Tommy Joseph's RBI-groundout in the fifth extended Augusta's lead to 6-1.
Augusta tagged Bayer for two more runs in the eighth, getting an RBI-double by Crawford and a sacrifice fly to left by Nick Liles to close out the game's scoring.
The Drive continue this four-game home series with Augusta Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with Greenville's Manuel Rivera (2-5, 4.14 ERA) getting the start against Augusta's BJ Salsbury (4-3, 3.71 ERA).
