Altuve's Homer Helps Legends Get Past West Virginia

May 27, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL) Lexington Legends

Jose Altuve's three-run homer in the second inning put the Lexington Legends in front for good as the Legends defeated the West Virginia Power 5-3 Thursday night in Charleston.

West Virginia had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double by Evan Chambers and a single by David Rubenstein.

Jonathan Meyer singled to start the Legends rally in the second inning. Andy Simunic doubled, sending Meyer to third. After Jordan Comadena grounded out, Grant Hogue's infield single brought home the tying run. Altuve followed with a drive over the wall in left field, his third home run of the year, giving Lexington a 4-1 lead.

Kyle Morgan hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second for West Virginia. The Power closed to within a run in the seventh, when Morgan tripled and scored on a wild pitch.

The Legends added an insurance run in the ninth on consecutive two-out singles by Jiovanni Mier, J.D. Martinez and Kody Hinze. Hinze leads the South Atlantic League with 51 RBI.

David Duncan (3-0) pitched the first five innings to get the win. Kirk Clark pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his eighth save. West Virginia starter Maurice Bankston (2-2) was the losing pitcher.

The Legends, after going 5-3 on the road trip to Greensboro and West Virginia, return home to face Greensboro Friday night at Applebee's Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
