Intimidators Hold Lead, Earn Split 3-2
May 27, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL) Kannapolis Intimidators
SAVANNAH, GA -After losing leads in four of their last six games, the Kannapolis Intimidators would not be denied victory in the finale of the four game series as they narrowly defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats by the score of 3-2.Down 2-0 in the seventh inning, the Intimidators (24-24) got Trayce Thompson to reach on an error with one out before Nick Ciolli doubled him home to cut the lead in half. With Ciolli on second base, Kevin Dubler walked and then both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch setting up second and third for Daniel Wagner. Wagner, the South Rowan High School star came through for his hometown team sending a sharp ground ball to the right side, off the glove of the second baseman and into right field for a single plating two runs and giving the Intimidators the 3-2 lead.
Matt Hopps started the game for the Intimidators and went two outs deep into the seventh inning before leaving with the bases loaded and two down. Manager Ernie Young called on Orlando Santos from the bullpen and Santos came through with a huge strikeout in the seventh to end the inning, a clean eighth and a shaky but scoreless ninth as he walked the leadoff batter. Hopps (1-3) wins his first game of the season and Santos grabbed his first save of the year.
Mark Cohoon pitched 6.1 innings and allowed two unearned runs and Erik Turgeon (1-1) takes the loss allowing the Intimidators to get to .500 again. The Sand Gnats drop to 28-20.
After a 3-5 road trip the Intimidators will return home for eight straight games, four with the Charleston RiverDogs, the New York Yankees affiliate, and four with the Greenville Drive, the affiliates of the Boston Red Sox. The homestand begins on Friday at 7:05 with Joe Serafin going for his fifth win, and there will be post-game fireworks after the game.
