Portland Sea Dogs News Release

(Portland, Maine)- The Portland Sea Dogs trailed for all but one of the first seven innings in Friday night's game against the Trenton Thunder, but in the end, it was the final score that mattered. The Sea Dogs recorded a season-high 16 hits, but got only one in a five-run eighth inning that turned an 8-6 deficit into an 11-8 victory.

Trenton wasted little time in taking the lead. Justin Christian led off the evening with a walk. After a pair of flyouts, Austin Romine picked up the game's first RBI, driving in Christian with a double off of the Maine Monster. Romine took third base on the throw, and scored on Brandon Laird's single to right.

Despite getting three runners on base, the Sea Dogs were scoreless in the first. Che-Hsuan Lin led off the bottom of the second with a single to left, and quickly moved to third base, when Juan Apodaca doubled over the center fielder's head. Both runners came around to score on the next play, as Jose Iglesias picked up a single on a soft dribbler in front of the plate. Lin scored by beating the throw, while Apodaca scored when the throw went wide.

The game didn't stay tied for long, as the Thunder regained the lead in the top of the third. After a pair of quick outs, David Adams started the rally with a walk. The next batter up was Austin Romine, who doubled home Adams with a hit off of the right field wall. Once again, Romine's stay on the bases was a short one, as Brandon Laird singled to left.

Trenton added one more run off of Casey Kelly, who saw his day end after three innings. In that time, Boston's top pitching prospect allowed five runs, five hits, and three walks, while striking out one. Tommy Hottovy took over for Kelly, and two batters into Hottovy's outing, he was greeted by a solo home run off the bat of Luis Nunez.

Portland got that run back in the bottom of the fourth, as the Hadlock Field faithful got what they were hoping for. Mike Cameron took a 1-0 offering, and deposited it over the left-center field wall, cutting the deficit to 6-3. In two games with the Sea Dogs, Cameron was 2-for-8, with two runs and two RBI.

The Sea Dogs got another run back in the fifth, before the two clubs exchanged two-run halves in the seventh. The Thunder scored on an RBI double by Daniel Brewer and an RBI single by Kevin Smith, while Portland saw Anthony Rizzo smack his second home run in Double-A.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Sea Dogs took their first lead of the night. Jose Iglesias led off with a triple, before the bases were loaded on back-to-back walks to Chih-Hsien Chiang and Matt Sheely. After a strikeout by Nate Spears, Ray Chang walked, scoring Iglesias with Portland's seventh run of the game. A wild pitch scored Chiang, and Luis Exposito put the home team on top, flying out to right field, driving in Sheely. Trenton reliever Noel Castillo nearly got out of the inning, but a throwing error and a wild pitch brought two more runners across home plate.

Ryne Lawson (3-2) got the win for Portland, pitching two and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball. Paul Bush (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs without recording an out.

The two teams will play a single-admission doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, with the first game starting at 1:00. Game one will see Stephen Fife (2-1, 3.22) take on Hector Noesi (Double-A debut). In game two, Wilkin De La Rosa (1-2, 4.95) goes for the Thunder, while the Sea Dogs have yet to name a starting pitcher.
