Portland, ME- The Thunder bullpen failed to hold a two-run lead in the eighth inning, as Portland scored five runs on one hit to take the lead, and they defeated the Thunder 11-8 on Friday night at Hadlock Field. With the loss, Trenton falls to 22-17 on the season.

The scoring came early and often for both teams, as Trenton scored two runs off Portland starting RHP Casey Kelly in the first inning, and the Sea Dogs answered back with two of their own in the bottom of the second inning.

In the top of the third inning, a trio of run-scoring hits from Austin Romine, Brandon Laird and Kevin Smith increased the Thunder lead to 5-2. Both teams exchanged solo home runs in the fourth inning, with Red Sox OF Mike Cameron getting the homer for Portland on a rehab assignment. Portland INF Ray Chang came in to score on a wild pitch from Mitchell in the fifth, and the Thunder had a 6-4 lead after five innings.

Each team scored two runs in the seventh inning, but Portland was able to score five runs off Thunder pitching in the eighth inning to take the lead for good. The five runs came on only one hit, a fielding error and two wild pitches from RHP Noel Castillo. Trenton used three pitchers in the inning, including Paul Bush (0-1) who faced three batters and did not record an out in his season debut.

In the top of the ninth, RHP Ryne Lawson (3-2) struck out two batters, and Tony Franklin and Brandon Laird were ejected for arguing ball and strikes. Daniel Brewer made the final out, grounding to third base to end the game.

In the loss, Austin Romine and Brandon Laird had three hits each. Kevin Smith collected two hits and drove in two runs as well.

The Thunder and Sea Dogs will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 PM. RHP Hector Noesi makes his Thunder debut as the starter for game one and Portland will start RHP Stephen Fife. LHP Wilkin De La Rosa will start game two for Trenton, while no starter has yet to be announced by Portland.
