Sea Dogs Walk to Victory

Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Portland, ME)- Control issues plagued the Reading Phillies' pitchers all afternoon on Thursday, and the Portland Sea Dogs made sure to take advantage. Sea Dogs' hitters drew a total of ten walks, and three of them came around to score, as the home team erased a 6-2 deficit for a 7-6 win at Hadlock Field.
On Wednesday night, the Sea Dogs recorded four doubles, but were unable to manufacture any runs off of those hits. Thursday afternoon was a different story. Nate Spears led off the bottom of the first with a double to left, and Ryan Kalish walked. With two men on, Luis Exposito doubled to right field, giving the home team a quick 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, the Phillies erased their deficit, while grabbing the lead for the first time. Freddy Galvis started Reading's rally with a walk, moved to second on a single by Ozzie Chavez, and scored on Mike Spidale's single to left. Two batters later, Domonic Brown singled up the middle, setting the stage for Tagg Bozied. The Phillies' cleanup hitter smacked a double to right field, scoring Chavez and Spidale.
One inning later, the visitors added to their lead. Tuffy Gosewich led off the frame with a single to left. After a Freddy Galvis ground out, Ozzie Chavez and Mike Spidale hit back-to-back doubles, putting Reading ahead, 5-2.
The end of the fourth inning also spelled the end of the day for Sea Dogs' starter, Stephen Fife. In four innings of work, Fife allowed five runs, eight hits, and one walk, while striking out five. Vance Worley lasted one inning longer for the Phillies, allowing two runs, six hits, and three walks, while striking out seven, in five innings of work. Both starters received no decisions.
After Worley left the game, Portland's bats came to life. Chance Chapman and Matt German combined to walk the bases loaded, with German walking Ray Chang, for the Sea Dogs' third run of the afternoon. Ryan Kalish stepped up next, and knocked in two runs, with a single to right field. Luis Exposito's walk loaded the bases yet again, but Michael Stutes came out of the bullpen to retire Yamaico Navarro on a pop-up to the catcher.
Stutes wasn't as fortunate in the seventh, as the home team evened the score. Che-Hsuan Lin started the inning with a walk, but was thrown out at second on an attempted steal. Jose Iglesias came up next, and made it to second base on a double, but didn't stay there long, as Chih-Hsien Chiang doubled him home. Chiang tried to extend his double to a triple, but was gunned down at third.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Sea Dogs took the lead. Ryan Kalish and Luis Exposito picked up back-to-back singles, and Yamaico Navarro walked, loading the bases. Che-Hsuan Lin also drew a walk, bringing in Kalish with the go-ahead run.
Santo Luis (1-0) earned the win, pitching two scoreless frames for Portland. He defeated Sergio Escalona (0-2), who allowed one run in two-thirds of an inning. Jason Rice tossed a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season.
On Friday night, the Sea Dogs will begin a three-game series in New Britain against the Rock Cats. Felix Doubront (2-0, 3.33) will make his sixth start of the season for Portland, while New Britain counters with Tyler Robertson (0-2, 4.79). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
