Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels walked off winners courtesy of Nick Noonan's game-winning single in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving them a 2-1 victory over the Altoona Curve in front of 4,911 on Thursday afternoon at The Diamond.

With the game knotted, 1-1, Clay Timpner led off the 11th against Ronald Uviedo with a hard-hit single to right-center field. A batter later, Tyler La Torre singled him to third before Noonan came to the plate. Noonan fell into an 0-2 hole, but cracked a two-strike fastball over the head of second baseman Josh Harrison with the game-winning single. Uviedo (0-2) was saddled with the loss for Altoona.

The win allowed the Squirrels to split the four-game series with the Curve and set their record during their home stand at 5-2. Right-hander Daniel Turpen (3-1) was awarded the win, having turned in an inning and two thirds through the 11th inning.

For the third consecutive ballgame, Altoona struck first in the first, plating an unearned run against Clayton Tanner. With one away, Gorkys Hernandez recorded a high-hop infield-single. Tanner then walked Josh Harrison to move Hernandez to second. With the runners on the move, Matt Hague then bounced a ball to third that Conor Gillaspie misplayed, allowing Hernandez to give Altoona a 1-0 lead.

Curve starter Derek Hankins was in control for the first three innings, but Richmond broke through to tie the game in the fourth. Roger Kieschnick doubled to open the inning, and came around on two ground-ball outs, the second from Gillaspie.

Both Tanner and Hankins were outstanding outside of allowing a lone run. Each starter retired to a no-decision after six innings of work. Ronnie Ray worked a scoreless seventh inning, while Tony Watson worked three scoreless innings out of the Altoona bullpen.

Felix Romero turned two perfect innings, and the ballgame went tied at one to the ninth after Romero retired all six batters that he faced through the seventh and eighth. Andy Sisco and Turpen combined to work through the top of the 11th inning with the game still tied, 1-1. That included Turpen working through a bases-loaded jam with one in the 10th by rolling a double-play ball from Hernandez.

The Flying Squirrels will open a three-game set with the Harrisburg Senators at Metro Bank Park in Harrisburg on Friday night at 7:00 PM. RHP Daryl Maday (4-0, 1.19) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Erik Arneson (0-1, 2.29) for the Senators. The game will mark the first ever between the two clubs.
