Baysox Fall Short of Senators Sweep

May 6, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Bowie Baysox lost 6-3 Thursday night to the Harrisburg Senators, falling short of a four-game sweep. It was the first time that Harrisburg had beaten Bowie in seven tries, as the Baysox dropped to 15-13. Bowie stands in third place in the Eastern League's Western Division, four games behind the Altoona Curve.

Pasadena, Md. native Chorye Spoone made the start for the Baysox and continued his recent struggles, giving up six runs -- all in the first three innings -- off nine hits through six innings. He had walked 12 batters in his previous 13 innings of work, and improved on that front with just one walk in the game.

The Baysox had little difficulty getting hits in the loss, outhit by Harrisburg just 9-8, but struggled with the timing of those hits. Bowie left five players on base but, more tellingly, went 0-for-10 at the plate with runners in scoring position.

The Baysox got on the board in the top of the second inning, as Miguel Abreu followed a left field single by moving from first to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Harrisburg starter Tom Milone. Caleb Joseph grounded out to shortstop on the next play, but Abreu was able to get across home safely. It was the first game all season in which the Baysox have scored first and gone on to lose.

Harrisburg fired back in the bottom of the frame. Shortstop Jesus Valdez led off with an infield single to third base before Spoone walked outfielder Leonard Davis. Valdez was a thorn in Bowie's side throughout the series, going 7-for-15 at the plate with three RBIs and a home run. With Davis and Valdez on first and second, Nationals prospect first baseman Chris Marrero erased Bowie's lead with a powerful blast to right-center field on Spoone's first pitch that put the Senators up 3-1.

The Senators led off the third inning with another single, this time by second baseman Michael Martinez. Martinez moved to second on a wild pitch by Spoone before a fielding error by Baysox first baseman Joel Guzman that allowed Martinez to score as shortstop Danny Espinosa reached first. Espinosa stole second base and was driven in by Davis on a two-run home run to right that put the Senators in a commanding 6-1 lead. Davis's was the fourth homer that Spoone has given up this season.

Spoone gave up just three more hits with no runs through his final three innings and was replaced by Zach Clark, who continued the excellent form of the Bowie bullpen with no hits or walks allowed in the last two innings while notching two strikeouts. As a unit, Baysox relievers have not given up an earned run since April 28.

The Baysox had runners on second and third in the top of the eighth with team RBIs leader Tyler Henson at the plate, who grounded out to second base but still drove in shortstop Pedro Florimon for his 19th RBI of the season.

Guzman made one more dent in the Senators' lead with a lead-off home run to right, his team-best sixth long ball of the year. Guzman's solo-shot made the game 6-3, but that was all the Baysox would manage as Victor Garate came on to record the save for Harrisburg and retired Robbie Widlansky, Abreu and Joseph in order to snap the Senators' six-game losing streak.

The Baysox move on to Trenton, N.J. for a three-game set with the Thunder over the weekend before they come back to Bowie on May 10 to open a series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels.

That first game back will be the Baysox inaugural Beard-a-Palooza, where any fan with a beard may purchase half-priced lower reserved seat tickets ($7) for the game, limit one per beard. Fans who cannot grow a beard are encouraged to make one! Between-inning contests include "What's In the Beard" and longest and most colorful beards.
