Richmond, VA - The Altoona Curve were unable to grab a series victory on Thursday afternoon as the Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA - San Francisco) nabbed an 11-inning victory and prevailed 2-1 at the Diamond.
The Curve finished their week-long road trip with a record of 5-2 and remain 2.5 games in first place.
Altoona would get on the board early in the first as Gorkys Hernandez would score on an error Richmond third baseman Connor Gillespie. The Curve would hold the 1-0 edge until an RBI ground out in the fourth inning by the Squirrels' Gillespie would avenge for his first-inning error and knot the score, 1-1.
Altoona (18-8) and Richmond (16-11) would lock horns over the next seven stanzas, trading scoreless frames.
Altoona starter Derek Hankins tossed six solid innings, scattering one run on five hits, while lefty Tony Watson pitched scoreless baseball for three innings.
Ronald Uviedo came on in the top of the 10th inning and shut down the Squirrels before a pair of one-out base hits in the bottom of the 11th put runners at the corners for Richmond and Nick Noonan's single up the middle scored the game winning run for Richmond.
Alex Presley went 0-for-4 in the game, ending his 19-game hitting streak which ranks second-best in franchise history.
The Altoona Curve return home to open at six-game homestand at Blair County Ballpark on Friday at 6:30 p.m. as they welcome the Erie SeaWolves (AA -Detroit Tigers) for a three-game set. LHP Justin Wilson (1-1, 5.51) gets the ball for the first-place Curve while LHP Duane Below toes the rubber for the 'Wolves (1-3, 5.09). Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the first 1,500 kids ages 14 and under will receive a Webkinz Giveaway presented by Thompson Pharmacy - It's All for You!
