Mastroianni Hit Streak Reaches 12 Games with Second Home Run
May 6, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH - Darin Mastroianni stretched his hitting streak to a team season-high 12 games by connecting for his second home run of the season, but the New Britain Rock Cats erased an early 2-0 deficit to edge the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 3-2, on Thursday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium, splitting the four-game series.
Mastroianni (1-for-5, HR) broke up a scoreless tie by taking a Carlos Gutierrez offering over the right field fence in the bottom of the third, giving New Hampshire a 1-0 lead. It was his first homer since he took Gutierrez deep in the first at-bat of the 2010 season at New Britain Stadium on April 8.
The Fisher Cats (18-9) extended the league to 2-0 with a pair of two-out hits in the fourth against Gutierrez. Manny Mayorson (1-for-3, 2B, SAC, R) doubled to the gap in right-center, and Jonathan Jaspe (1-for-4, RBI) scored him with a single to right.
Gutierrez went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking four and notching four strikeouts.
Steve Singleton (2-for-4, HR, 2B) led off the top of the fifth by lofting a solo homer, his second, off Randy Boone to trim New Hampshire's lead to 2-1
New Britain (6-20) tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the sixth against Boone when Yancarlos Ortiz (2-for-3, R) and Ben Revere (2-for-3, HBP) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. With runners on the corners, Ortiz scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Estarlin De Los Santos (0-for-4, RBI).
Boone yielded two runs on five hits in six innings, registering six strikeouts.
The Rock Cats grabbed the lead in the eighth against losing pitcher Adrian Martin when Joe Benson (1-for-4, HR) tagged his fourth homer of the year, a solo blast off the videoboard in right-center for a 3-2 lead.
Martin (0-1) gave up one run on three hits in 1.1 innings, notching a pair of strikeouts in the loss.
Cole DeVries (1-3) earned his first victory with four masterful no-hit innings of relief. The right-hander fanned four and shook off two Rock Cats' errors in the bottom of the ninth inning by inducing a game-ending fly out from Callix Crabbe with the tying run at second base.
The Fisher Cats hit the road on Friday to open a three-game series against the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium. New Hampshire right-hander Zach Stewart (2-1, 5.75) opposes B-Mets left-hander Mike Antonini (3-2, 4.33) in the 7:05pm game. Fisher Cats Pre-Game gets underway at 6:45pm with Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
The Fisher Cats return home to open a four-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Thursday, May 13. An Atlas Fireworks Show follows the 7:05pm game between the future Red Sox and the future Blue Jays. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
