Greenville Drive News Release
Charleston, WV - The Drive (7-6) may have been outhit Tuesday night, but they did something that the Power (5-7) weren't able to do - take advantage of those hits. Greenville collected six hits to West Virginia's 10, but also drew six walks en route to a 6-1 victory at Appalachian Power Park.
The Power took a 1-0 lead after two innings, but the Drive quickly answered and never looked back. After the first two outs were quickly retired, the Drive's next three batters reached base with Derrik Gibson recording an RBI-double and Jeremy Hazelbaker adding a run-scoring single.
With the pitching clicking, the Drive pulled away in the top of the sixth with three more runs. Once again, all three runs came with two outs in the inning as Reymond Fuentes laced a two-run triple, and scored on a passed ball.
The Drive added their final run in the top of the seventh without tallying a hit as they drew three walks, including Michael Almanzar's free pass with the bases loaded.
Four pitchers scattered the Power's 10 hits, with Jordan Flasher (1-0) earning his first victory of the season, coming out of the bullpen. Starting pitcher Manuel Rivera lasted 4.0 innings, surrendering one run before combining with Flasher, Cesar Cabral and Dennis Neuman to hold West Virginia scoreless over the final seven innings.
The Drive and Power continue their four game series on Wednesday with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM from Appalachian Power Park. Right-hander Ramon Mendez (0-1, 24.55 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, as Duke Welker makes his season debut for West Virginia.
Following their eight-game road trip, the Drive return home to Fluor Field on Saturday, April 24th. Before the Drive return home there will be a collegiate baseball game at their home field on Thursday, April 22nd featuring Furman and Presbyterian College, and a high school contest on Friday, April 23rd between Wren and Easley.
