Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats came to town looking to seek vengeance on an Augusta GreenJackets team that took three of four from them last week in Savannahand to some small measure, they got it. Savannah won 11-3 in the game that followed two straight days of GreenJackets walk-off wins.
The Gnats jumped out early off Augusta starter Chris Heston (1-1), pounding five hits off the righty in the first inning to score four runs. Of the 18 Sand Gnats hits in the game, eight were for extra bases.
Down 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the GreenJackets mounted their best chance to make it a close game. With one out and the bases full, John Eshleman's walk brought in a run and sent the tying run to the plate. Ryan Cavan grounded into an inning-ending double play to kill the rally and Augusta's best chance to get into the game. An inning later, Wilmer Flores hit a two-run home run to push the lead back to six and the Jackets never got any closer.
Flores' homer came as part of a three-hit, five-RBI night for the Savannah shortstop. In a night where all nine Sand Gnats regulars reached base, six Gnats tallied multi-hit games, led by catcher Kai Gronauer's four hits. The GreenJackets got a three-hit performance by Eliezer Zambrano and two hits apiece from Daniel Cook and Nick Liles.
Mark Cohoon (3-0) picked up his second win in as many starts against the GreenJackets, firing six innings of two-run baseball. Cohoon scattered eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts in the contest. Heston was hit hard in his four innings, yielding five runs on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
The second game of the series features the third start of the season for Augusta righty Jorge Bucardo (0-1, 4.00). He'll face Savannah's Collin McHugh (1-1, 4.50).First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW-AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
