Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, N.C. - CF Miguel Velazquez put the Hickory Crawdads ahead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, and they never looked back en route to the 8-6 win against the Charleston RiverDogs before 305 fans on a rainy night at L.P. Frans Stadium.

The Crawdads (6-7) struck first on an RBI single by RF Jared Prince in the first inning, but Charleston (5-8) came right back with an unearned tally against RHP Wilmer Font (2-0, 3.07), to tie it, 1-1, through 2.5 innings.

Hickory, though, responded right away with Velazquez's shot in the third to take the 3-1 lead. LF Cody Podraza started the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and trotted home on the Velazquez homer off RHP Sean Black (0-1, 7.71).

Podraza extended the lead to 4-1 with a two-out RBI double in the fourth, plating 1B Ed Koncel, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. RiverDogs CF Zolio Almonte brought the RiverDogs within two in the next frame with a solo shot off Font, the only earned run that he allowed in five innings.

The Crawdads promptly responded again, scoring three runs against Black in the bottom of the fifth, stretching the lead to 7-2. The big inning was fueled by three RBI singles from Prince, DH Cristian Santana and C Zach Zaneski, putting the 'Dads up by five.

After RHP Andrew Doyle dealt a scoreless sixth for Hickory, the RiverDogs struck for two against RHP Kyle Ocampo in the seventh to once again bring the Crawdads lead back down to three, 7-4. However, an RBI single by Leury Garcia in the bottom of the eighth gave the Crawdads a little more breathing room, 8-4.

Ocampo retook the mound to start the top of the ninth, but an error and Almonte's second homer cut the lead to two and ended Ocampo's evening. RHP Josh Lueke was summoned from the bullpen and retired the next three in a row to close out the Crawdads 8-6 victory.

Font registered his second win of the season and Lueke picked up his league-best fourth save, while Black ends up with the loss for Charleston.
